There’s still time to register for the Learning Network & Knowledge Hub Webinar titled: Gender-Based Violence in a Migration and Refugee Context: Forms, Impacts, Barriers and Responses.

This webinar is based on research conducted by a Canadian research team as part of the multi-country, interdisciplinary project, “Violence against Women Migrants and Refugees: Analysing Causes and Effective Policy Response.”

To better understand migrant and refugee women’s (MRW) experiences of gender-based violence (GBV) in Canada, the research team conducted interviews with policymakers, advocates, and service providers, as well as with MRW survivors of GBV. The speakers will present an analysis of these two datasets with a focus on GBV forms, impacts and barriers and MRW responses and resilience, amplified by the structural vulnerabilities of the immigration/settlement and anti-violence sectors when it comes to supporting MRW GBV survivors.

Presenters will draw upon theoretical approaches such as the continuum of violence, intersectionality, social determinants of health, vulnerability, and the social ecology of resilience. They will conclude the webinar with recommendations for changes to policy and practice.

Missed the LN/NFF Resource Spotlight? The recording is now available.

Online gaming has become one of the most influential spaces where young people connect, learn, and build community. This session highlighted the online harms that can occur in these spaces, including violent misogyny and technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

The Resource Spotlight, Online Gaming, Online Harms: Supportive Strategies for Building Resilience, introduced two new, bilingual online training resources developed by Christchurch Call, designed to empower caring adults and digital bystanders to help create safer digital communities. These resources offer practical tools and strategies to help support young people as they navigate online spaces.

Level Up Safely! is for parents, caregivers, educators, and any adult who supports young people at home, school or in the community. This course aims to improve your knowledge, understanding, and strategies to build your confidence in helping the young people you care for navigate online gaming spaces more safely.

💻 Digital Bystanders Community Moderator Training supports online community moderators and trust and safety practitioners who manage online gaming, gaming-adjacent, and interactive social platforms such as Twitch and YouTube Live, in-game voice and text chats and Discord servers.

These free trainings are now available on the Neighbours, Friends & Families website.

September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. It is a time to honour First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities, and to remember the children who never returned home.

Reconciliation calls on us to listen to Survivors, acknowledge past and ongoing harms, commit to upholding the truth, and to confront denialism in all its forms. Survivors have shared what happened, how the harms continue, and what needs to change. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) issued 94 Calls to Action that provide a path forward.

Understanding the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools and the experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada is foundational to the work to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. The TRC and the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls document the residential school system’s enduring role in violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) offers a pathway for continued learning through Honouring Truth, Advancing Reconciliation: An NWAC Toolkit for Learning, Reflection and Action.

The NWAC Toolkit centers Survivor stories and brings together resources, reflection questions and practical steps for action. As NWAC reminds us throughout this toolkit, reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility that extends beyond September 30. It invites us to reflect on what we have learned and consider how we can carry it forward through our actions throughout the year, in our relationships, in our work with colleagues and across our organizations and communities.

Elle portera non seulement sur ce que propose le projet de loi, mais aussi sur les raisons pour lesquelles ces réformes sont importantes, sur ce qu’elles pourraient signifier pour les personnes survivantes et le secteur de la violence fondée sur le sexe (VFS), ainsi que sur les considérations relatives à leur mise en œuvre qui sont nécessaires pour que les changements législatifs se traduisent par des améliorations concrètes de la sécurité des personnes survivantes.
