September is LITERACY MONTH in BC and we will be celebrating literacy, and the many ways it helps us learn, work, connect and participate in our communities.

We want to extend a huge thank you to the District of Kitimat and Kitimat Leisure Services for lighting up Tamitik Arena in purple - the official color of Literacy Month.

💡 Did you know? Literacy is about so much more than reading a book. We use literacy skills every day — when we read a text message, follow a recipe, understand a paycheque, fill out a form, use technology, help a child with homework, follow directions or navigate information online.

Literacy is everywhere — and it belongs to everyone. ❤️

We've got some fun things planned for Literacy Month - you'll definitely want to stay tuned! 👀📚

📚 Kitimat’s Little Book Shelters are turning ONE! 🎉
It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since our Little Book Shelters were installed in neighborhoods around Kitimat. And over this past year, we’ve loved seeing community members stop to browse, take a book or leave a book.
These little shelters were truly a community effort, and as we mark their first year, we want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped bring this to fruition:
📚 Fluor Constructors Canada Ltd., Lindberg Construction 2010 Inc and Graham Construction who built and donated the shelters
🔨 MALT Ventures Inc. for installing them throughout the community
🏘️ The District of Kitimat / Kitimat Leisure Services for their support in finding them homes around town
🛠️ Dan Striker for taking care of maintenance and minor repairs when needed
❤️ And, most importantly, OUR COMMUNITY — for your use of them, your excitement about them, your donation of books, and for looking after them!

What a great opportunity to not only pick up some high quality compost, but to see how our food and yard waste program is working! So grab your bins and a shovel and dig in!

Thanks, Kitimat!

Collecting food and yard waste at the curb means we have been able to create locally made, high quality compost right at the Kitimat Landfill.

It's largely supported public gardens and park spaces to date, but we are offering the chance to pick some up for yourself!

Our compost giveaway happens Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29, between 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Kitimat Landfill. You just need to bring a shovel and your bins. Compost available while supplies last.

There is a limit of six 121L bins.

On the Saturday, we are also offering tours of the compost facility and you can see how it all works. Tours run 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. that day.
