KHWS was formed in 1948 to promote the teaching of weaving, spinning and other related crafts in both their historic, contemporary and technical contexts.KHWS is the largest guild of its kind in eastern Ontario, drawing its membership, of over 80 members. Initially, members met in each other’s houses.Over the years the organization grew, utilizing various studio spaces in town, including, at one p

oint, the attic of City Hall. In 1973 the Guild moved to the newly-purchased, City-owned J.K.Tett Centre, occupying a substantial studio space. The Portsmouth Town Hall became KHWS’s interim home in 2009 as a complete renovation, restoration and rejuvenation of “The Tett” was about to begin. In late 2013 or early 2014 KHWS will return to the Tett to occupy a wonderful new studio. This move will coincide with our organization’s 65th birthday! KHWS is one of the largest guild of its kind in eastern Ontario, drawing its membership, of over 80 member, from a radius of about100 Km. It is now incorporated under the laws of the Province of Ontario as a non-profit corporation.

A challenge for us some day?

The annual International Back to Back Wool Challenge has been run and won for 2026 with ten teams competing from three different countries around the world.

Congratulations to the winning team Spinning Knitwits from Australia, and to all teams who might have taken on the Challenge for the first time, or reduced their time by a whole working day, or simply put their hand up to support woolcraft promotion and cancer research.
