Known in many Indigenous cultures as the “heart berry,” the strawberry symbolizes love, healing, and the relationships that connect us to family, community, and land.

In Heart Berry, Dr. Carleigh Candice Mignonne Milburn draws on these teachings to explore healing, reciprocity, and interconnectedness, while encouraging meaningful conversations around decolonization and reconciliation.

🌱Raspberry Relations: Let’s Reconcile Amidst the Bushes (2024)

Through memories of tending raspberry bushes alongside her father, Dr. Carleigh Candice Mignonne Milburn reflects on relationships, care, and our deep connection to the land.

Inspired by the teachings of the raspberry, nurturing, patience, and reciprocity, this work invites us to consider how reconciliation can grow through everyday acts of care and community connection.

“Whenever you see a heron, it is said that something good may be coming your way.”

Created by Dr. Carleigh Candice Mignonne Milburn, Always Listen to Heron reflects on wisdom, reciprocity, and the teachings we carry through generations. Inspired by summers spent on the water and the herons that watched over her family, this work invites viewers to consider how we give back to the land and to one another with openness and care.

The Downtown Kingston BIA has had the privilege of collaborating with Jaylene across two landmark projects.

WAAWAATEG 2023 was a multi-artist Indigenous storytelling initiative that produced five original works celebrating Indigenous culture and community, including The Bear in Me, a painting and story that Jaylene co-created with Dakota Ward, which tells the story of a young cardinal and a bear exchanging their perspectives on life during the cold winter months.

SPIRIT OF WINTER 2025 brought Waawaateg's stories to life through animated projection mapping onto Kingston City Hall and the Bank of Montreal, with Jaylene's artwork narrated nightly in English, French, Cree, and Ojibwe.
