A Kingston Club work party deployed on a sunny Thursday to conduct a short reroute of the main trail at Gould Lake North, west of Waypoint 04E. This 300m reroute is now fully marked and detours around a steep incline that was problematic after rain or in the winter.

The reroute partially piggybacks on an existing Kingston Field Naturalists' trail and we appreciate the KFN allowing us to continue to use their property. Thanks to the section maintainer, Scott M, and maintainer Janice T-C for volunteering their time and energy to make this happen. Thanks also to the kind neighbour who brought out tea and chocolate.

The view from the bench at the top of the hill is impressive, particularly at this time of year, and members are encouraged to check it out. Hike on!

“This Summer in late July we hiked half of section 9E-10A. Theo enjoyed the hike so much he brought along a friend Wyatt and we hiked the whole section in reverse from 10A-9E.

These eight year old boys were energetic but inquisitive enough to slow down for each and every new mushroom along the path. Turns out a rainy summer makes for a great fungi investigation. We had a great discussion about leaving nature to be enjoyed and took many pictures to share and enjoy later. I was thrilled to see how unhappy both boys were to discover some items that other hikers had left behind and we have decided to take a garbage bag with us on our next trip.

There were a couple of left behind items that provoked a different reaction however! We included these items in our photos. We discovered a huge fallen tree across the trail and reported it using Trail Alerts on the RTA site. Both boys learned to use the blazes to help us find our way back on the trail.

Near the end of the trail we discovered we had picked up some hitchhikers. With some research once we got home we found out they were Canada Tick Trefoil according to networkofnature.org Highlights on the trail were the abandoned mica holes, the low bridge where the bullfrogs serenaded us as we sat to eat lunch, the tall bridge near the beaver dam and of course the old car.

We highly recommend this hike for its variety of terrain and interesting sights.”

We are excited to announce that the Rideau Trail Association’s new Junior Hiker program has found a sponsor!

A heartfelt thank you to Susannah Curry and Scurry Communications for generously supporting this initiative, which will encourage children aged 13 and under to explore the Rideau Trail throughout the year.

Young hikers will be able to earn seasonal badges for completing their 3 km hikes in spring, summer, fall, and winter, with a special Junior Hiker badge awarded to those who complete all four seasons. Thanks to this support, we can now provide free badges to multiple children (earlier it was just one per family) within an RTA member’s family, including grandchildren, children, nieces, and nephews.

We are grateful for Susannah’s commitment to helping children and families discover the joy of hiking and develop a lifelong connection with the outdoors.

Clearing fallen trees across the trail is an important function of RTA Maintenance. Here we see the Kingston Maintenance Coordinator, Andy G, assisted by the Club's Construction Coordinator, James L, working to remove several trees blocking a sloped section of the Gould Lake Famous Trail blue route.

The RTA thanks our members and other hikers who report these obstructions, so they can removed in a timely and safe manner.

The RTA is looking for a community sponsor for our Junior Hiker program!

The program encourages children aged 13 and under to explore the Rideau Trail year-round, with a grandparent or other family member. They earn badges for completing a minimum 3 km hike in each season. Young hikers who complete all four seasonal hikes earn a special Junior Hiker badge. This family-focused initiative will help inspire the next generation of trail users and foster a lifelong love of the outdoors.

We're seeking sponsorship to subsidize the cost of the badges.
