February is Black History Month and we want to take this opportunity to recognize influential Afrolatinos (only some of many). Latin Americans can be of any race and it's important to acknowledge the multitude of ways in which Afrolatinos have shaped our countries, from entertainment to food to advances in human and environmental rights. There continues to be blatant racism toward Afrolatinos, both from other countries and within our own communities; we need to appreciate our diversity and how this has contributed to the Latin America we know now.

The third Latin American we’ve chosen to recognize this month is Miriam Miranda. Born in Santa Fe, she is an activist who advocates for human and environmental rights of the Garífuna people. Miriam has firmly held her beliefs despite being imprisoned and hurt because of them; she has focused on speaking up for her marginalized community and has led an organization to do so. She is also a feminist, claiming that women “don’t only birth children, but ideas and actions as well”.
