Millwright Local 1410 held its annual Retiree Lunch this Saturday at the The Glen House Resort & Smuggler's Glen Golf Course - 1000 Islands, Ontario. It was a great morning reconnecting with retirees—sharing stories from past jobs and members, plenty of laughs, and catching up on one another. We also had the opportunity to provide updates on current work and discuss forecasts for where our local is headed in the near future. A great way to honor our retirees and the foundation they built.

We were proud to recognize several retirees with years-of-service pins for reaching major milestones:
Rick Eyre (30 years)
Mark Harding (45 years)
Larry Craigen (50 years and honorary status)
Don Mallen (55 years).

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sister Vindra Maharaj-Seegobin on Monday, April 27. Vindra was a longstanding member of the Millwright Regional Council and a previous member of Millwright Local 1410. She was a pioneer for women in the trades and a mentor to all who knew her and had the privilege to work alongside her. Her kindness, dedication, and warm smile will be deeply missed.

Message from her family:

We are grieving the loss of our loving sister Vindra, a cherished daughter, sister, mother, teacher, and friend.

We appreciate all the prayers and support from all of the family and friends.

Details of her services will be forwarded once available.

April 28 is the National Day of Mourning—a day to reflect and honour the workers who have lost their lives, been injured, or suffered illness as a result of their work. Today, we remember them and recommit ourselves to fostering a strong culture of safety. Please take care of yourself and one another, and let’s continue working together to ensure everyone returns home safely at the end of every shift.

Yesterday, Millwright Local 1410 was proud to take part in the event in Ottawa, Ontario. The event welcomed approximately 550 female students from across the region, giving them the opportunity to speak directly with a wide range of employers about career options.
Students connected with representatives from diverse fields including policing, the military, heavy equipment, hairstyling, Air Canada, and many others. They were highly engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and showed strong curiosity about the many career paths available to them.
Thank you to Build a Dream for organizing such a well-run and impactful event that helps inspire and inform the next generation.

Today I had the opportunity to spend an hour speaking with educators from the Renfrew County District School Board. It was an engaged and thoughtful group, all genuinely interested in learning how best to guide students toward successful and rewarding careers in the skilled trades.
We discussed clear pathways into the trades, workplace safety, training opportunities, as well as wages, benefits, and pension plans.
The future of the trades is bright with dedicated educators like these helping lead and inspire the next generation of skilled tradespeople.
