🎨 Exploring Shapes and Creativity!

This morning, the children explored creative light and shapes while drawing chickens we saw last week! Using a projector, the image was placed on each child’s paper. Each child created their own interpretation—showing amazing creativity and problem-solving.

Interestingly, the children often used simple shapes, which has real significance in early childhood development:

- Representation of familiar forms: Simplifying complex objects into shapes they know supports visual-spatial reasoning.
- Symbolic thinking: Choosing shapes shows children beginning to represent objects abstractly.
- Motor control and coordination: Tracing and shaping strengthens fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
- Personal expression: Each child’s interpretation reflects individuality and creativity.

In short, these shapes show children learning to observe, abstract, and interpret the world, combining cognitive and motor skills in meaningful ways.

Even simple shapes can tell a big story about how children learn and see the world! 🌟

🌈 An Emerging Project in Our 3–5 Preschool: The Rainbow Store 🌈
In our part-time preschool classroom (ages 3–5), the children’s ongoing interest in rainbows naturally connected with familiar play around small market stores. Rather than pre-planning an activity, educators observed this interest over time and supported it to grow into a shared project: the rainbow store.
This is how learning happens in our preschool — through play that is meaningful, social, and rooted in children’s ideas.
As new rainbow “merchandise” is added to the store, children are:
• Counting small groups of items as they stock shelves and noticing when there are “more” or “less”
• Matching colours, sorting materials, and naming patterns using rainbow language
• Recognizing numerals on price tags and connecting numbers to real quantities
• Experimenting with early writing by creating signs, labels, and menus using marks, symbols, and familiar letters
• Taking turns in roles such as shopkeeper and customer, practising communication, self-regulation, and cooperation
• Revisiting the store over multiple days, remembering ideas from the past and building on them — creating a shared classroom “story” that continues to evolve
For 3–5 year olds, this kind of project supports foundational literacy and numeracy while also strengthening confidence, language, and a sense of belonging — all without pulling children away from play to sit at a table.
Our educators act as careful observers and co-learners, introducing materials and questions that extend children’s thinking while keeping the learning child-led.
✨ About our Preschool Program:
Our part-time preschool offers a gentle, play-based learning environment for children ages 3–5, where curiosity, relationships, and exploration guide the day. We currently have a few spaces available, and would love to welcome new families who are looking for a thoughtful, developmentally responsive preschool experience.

🔧✨ Real-world learning in action!

Our school-aged children visited the Automotive Training Centre at TRU, where automotive students introduced them them tire changes, oil changes and measuring tire pressure!

By working alongside real trades students, children experienced what it means to be part of a learning community. Through experiences like this, they discover how learning connects to real life — seeing how their community works, feeling a sense of contribution, and developing pride in their growing skills. 💫

A huge thank-you to the TRU Automotive Department and students for welcoming our learners with such enthusiasm — and to our amazing educators for planning and leading such a meaningful experience! 🙌

✨ Today’s adventure: A visit to the TRU School of Nursing! 🩺💙

Our school-aged children had the chance to explore a real nursing lab today— and they were completely fascinated. With kind guidance from a TRU professor, they learned how nurses listen to heartbeats, watched a CPR demo, and got curious about how our bodies work.

Experiences like this help children connect with the people in their community, ask big questions, and see how others care for those around them.

It was hands-on, full of discovery, and honestly… pretty cool. 🌱👂🧠

Thank you to our educators for organizing such an amazing schedule of outings with our schoolers this summer!

Documenting rich moments like these can remind us of the value and beauty of quiet, child-led inquiry.

✨ It’s easy to overlook the depth of children’s play — unless we pause, listen, and truly observe.

Our talented community of educators does just that every day. Through thoughtful documentation, they make children’s thinking visible, honour their voices, and celebrate the incredible learning unfolding moment by moment.

Play has purpose — and we’re proud to recognize the brilliance behind it. 🌱🖍️

🎨✨ Mud, Paint, and Possibilities! ✨🌿

Today our toddlers explored art in the most joyful, sensory-rich way — with paint and mud! 💛

Using natural materials like dandelions, sticks, and small pieces of bark, the children led their own creative experiments. Some used flowers as paintbrushes, others mixed earth and colour to see what would happen. There was no “right way” — just curious minds, messy hands, and big discoveries. 🌼🪵🖌️

This kind of child-led art supports:
🧠 Cognitive development through experimentation
🎨 Creative expression with open-ended materials
👐 Sensory exploration (a big part of learning in the early years!)
🌱 A deeper connection with the natural world

In moments like these, children aren’t just making art — they’re building confidence, testing ideas, and learning to trust their own voices. 💬💚
