🎃 What happens when a workplace brings together employees, families, retirees, and a shared commitment to giving back?

At Kruger inc. Kamloops, it looks like Halloween Alley.

Each year, employees, including members of Unifor 10-B, transform a section of their workplace parking lot into a Halloween wonderland for children and families. This year's event welcomed more than 60 participants and featured a Maintenance Superhero booth, a spooky haunted house tent, homemade cookie decorating, a fire truck, costumes, and plenty of Halloween fun. Employees working that day were even given time away from their shifts to join their loved ones and take part in the festivities.

United Way BC was also thrilled to be part of the fun with a Halloween scavenger hunt. More than 50 children completed the challenge, adding another interactive way for families to connect and celebrate together.

More than just a family event, Halloween Alley raises funds for United Way BC through donations, helping strengthen local communities while creating lasting connections.

❤️ It's a wonderful example of how workplace campaigns can think beyond traditional fundraising by bringing people together around a shared purpose.

Thanksgiving is a time to gather, share a meal, and feel connected to community.

But accessing nutritious food isn’t always easy for seniors in BC. Community food programs can help by providing supports such as groceries, prepared meals, food delivery, food hampers, and community meals.

This Thanksgiving, help put nutritious food within reach for seniors in our communities.

Communities across British Columbia did not simply respond to hunger last year. Working through United Way BC Food Security Initiatives, they tackled this complex issue by focusing on strengthening connection, belonging, and resilience for those in need.

Thanks to these efforts, almost 450,000 individuals were supported.

United Way BC stands in solidarity with Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and all those impacted by the recent demonstration by individuals associated with white nationalist ideology. Such actions are intended to intimidate, divide, and spread hate. They have no place in British Columbia.

Acts of hate, intimidation, and racism harm entire communities and run counter to the values of respect, inclusion, and reconciliation that so many people across British Columbia work to advance every day. We stand with Indigenous communities and with everyone affected by racism, and we condemn these actions unequivocally.

If you have experienced or witnessed racism in British Columbia, United Way BC can help through the Racist Incident Helpline. The service is free, confidential, available in more than 240 languages, and connects callers with support and resources in their community. Call 1-833-457-5463.

Many Elders of Pellt'iq't People of Whispering Pines/Clinton Indian Band, a Secwépemc community of 251 members just north of Kamloops carry the direct impacts of the residential school era and live with isolation, chronic health conditions, and mobility limitations.

This year on Truth and Reconciliation Day, these keepers of language, songs, protocol, and traditional making skills will share their knowledge with community members, particularly youth right in their home territory thanks to a driver and vehicle being available to transport Elders unable to drive themselves to the event.

For this community, intergenerational transmission of language and culture is urgent because the number of fluent speakers and knowledge holders is small.

Supporting Indigenous-led healing and gathering is an essential part of Truth & Reconciliation. United Way BC is honoured to support this event.

When five young entrepreneurs set up The Cuzzy Stand, they had more than lemonade and treats on their minds. They also wanted to make a difference.

After a discussion about where to donate a portion of their earnings, the kids initially considered supporting the BC SPCA because of their shared love of animals. But as they spent a Sunday designing signs and colouring menus, the smoky skies over Kamloops sparked a different conversation.

They began talking about the devastating wildfire seasons BC communities have faced and the families forced to leave their homes with little notice.

That's when the group decided to donate one-third of their earnings to the United Way BC Wildfire Relief Fund.

"Maybe they had to leave their home and they need money to buy medicine and clothes to wear. Let's donate to United Way BC Wildfire Fund," shared The Cuzzy Stand team.

For Ophelia, Elizabeth, Brandon, Norah, and Isabella, the decision was simple: help people who might need a hand during a difficult time.

We're incredibly grateful to these young changemakers for turning compassion into action and demonstrating the power of giving back.
Thank you, Ophelia, Elizabeth, Brandon, Norah, and Isabella, for helping neighbours across British Columbia when they need it most.

What a year! Across BC, seniors found friendship, support, and new ways to stay active and connected in their communities.

Our 2025–26 Healthy Aging Year in Review celebrates older adults and the local organizations, volunteers, donors, and partners who show up for them every day. Together, we’re helping seniors feel valued, included, and supported close to home.
