A beautiful fall day at UBC, a room full of enthusiastic learners and some very well-examined chicken breasts! 🍂

Saturday's BCRS Breast Biopsy MasterClass, held in partnership with BD at the UBC Life Sciences Centre, was a wonderful success!

Dr. Tanya Martin kicked things off with an insightful presentation on her research into Vacuum Assisted Excision (VAE) as a minimally invasive alternative to surgical excision of breast lesions.

Residents, radiologists and technologists then rotated through interactive stations, exploring different breast biopsy systems with guidance from BD's clinical specialists.

The challenge? Locate the pimento inside an olive hidden within a chicken breast! Using imaging guidance, participants put their needle biopsy skills to the test, practising accuracy, precision and technique in a supportive learning environment.

Dr. Tanya Martin and Dr. Jennifer Dolden were on hand throughout the sessions, sharing their clinical expertise and valuable tricks of the trade.

And the feedback? It speaks for itself!

CT or MRI? What’s the difference? 🩻

BC radiologist Dr. Emil Lee breaks it down in the latest reel from our What Is a Radiologist? campaign.

CT uses X‑rays that rotate in a circle around you to create cross‑sectional images of the body. It’s quick, often done in minutes.

MRI uses powerful magnets instead of radiation and is excellent for soft tissue, like the ACL in your knee. It takes longer, so expect to be in the scanner for a while.

Different tools for different questions, and every one of these scans is read by a radiologist.

Ever wondered why your doctor might order an X-ray instead of an ultrasound? Or what makes them so different?

They're both used to see what's happening inside your body, but they work in completely different ways!

In our latest What Is a Radiologist? reel, BC radiologist Dr. Emil Lee breaks it down:

🦴 X-rays use a small amount of radiation to capture images, particularly useful for looking at bones.

🔊 Ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of organs, tissues and even blood flow, without using radiation.

Different technologies. Different purposes. One shared goal: helping doctors understand what's happening inside your body.

And radiologists play an important role in interpreting those images!

Three words. One medical specialty. Plenty of opinions!

We gave some of BC's radiologists a deceptively simple challenge: describe a radiologist in just three words.

As it turns out, radiologists are much better at interpreting complex medical images than limiting themselves to three words!

The responses offer a fun glimpse into how these physicians see their profession, their work and the skills that make a great radiologist.
It's all part of our ongoing What Is a Radiologist? campaign, introducing the people behind the scans.

What’s the difference between Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology?

A scan is only one piece of the story.

Radiologists do much more than look at images. They bring together the findings on the scan with the patient’s clinical history, notes, prior imaging and other important information to help arrive at the right diagnosis.

It is about seeing the image in context and putting all the pieces together.

Because behind every scan is a patient, and every detail matters.
