🎃🚒 A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE GLENROSA COMMUNITY! 👻

From all of us at the West Kelowna Paid on Call Firefighters Association, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to support our Haunted House at Station 34 this Halloween!

What an incredible turnout! We had dozens of firefighters working throughout the day to bring the haunted house to life, and seeing over 1,300 people walk through the doors of Station 34 made all that hard work worthwhile.

It was fantastic to see so many families, kids, and community members come out to enjoy the scares, share some laughs, and celebrate Halloween with us. The smiles, excitement, and support reminded us why we love being part of this community.

❤️ A special thank you to everyone who donated to the Central Okanagan Food Bank. Your generosity helped fill a large donation bin, making this event about more than just Halloween fun. It was a wonderful reminder of how much good can happen when a community comes together to support those who need it.

To every firefighter who helped with the setup, everyone who volunteered their time, and every person who came through our doors, thank you for making this event such a success. These events take a tremendous amount of teamwork, and we couldn't do it without the people behind the scenes and the community that continues to support us.

We are proud to serve Glenrosa and the greater West Kelowna community, and we loved having the opportunity to welcome so many of you into our fire hall for a night of Halloween fun.

Thank you, Glenrosa, for showing up in such amazing numbers and helping make this year's Haunted House one to remember! 🎃

We can't wait to open the doors again next year. Until then, stay safe, take care of one another, and thank you for being such a fantastic community!

Calling all ghouls and ghosts!

The eve is almost upon us!

Join us on October 31st at West Kelowna Firehall #34 at 3399 Gates road for a night of spooks and scares. We will be running a less scary show for our little gremlins from 5:30-7:00 and taking a short break to reset.

At 7:30 we will re-open and you'd better hold onto your broomsticks because we will be going full scare from 7:30 until 9:00!

Please bring a donation for the Central Okanagan Food Bank!

FireFighter Spotlight - Loklin Brodie - R30

How long have you lived in the Okanagan?

My whole life! Born in Kelowna and moved to West Kelowna at 3 months old. My family has been here for generations.

What first got you interested in being part of WKFR?

When I was a young boy being evacuated several times and looking up to the other firefighters first spiked my interest in the department. From then on I knew I wanted to join the team. Years later at Mount Boucherie Secondary School I attended the Jr. Firefighter program.

What are your long term goals in the department?

Going career and seeing where my firefighting journey takes off from there. Learning and training to become the most proficient firefighter I can possibly be.

What’s your day job?

I am a Carpenter by trade, footing foundations and framing from the ground up.

What did you find was the best part about your recruit class?

Learning all of these new skills together and feeling accomplished as a team. Getting to know my new friends/ family has been the best experience.

What were your biggest challenges?

Knowing how to pace myself properly as the firefighting industry is a different kind of physical fitness.

What would your advice be to the new recruits signing up to successfully get through the 6 months of training?

It’s important to learn how to be adaptive and be prepared for any situation. Don’t come in with a strong ego. Respectfully put your head down and do what you’re told. Build relationships and you will grow off each other as recruits and make some great friends.

What are you most excited about now that you’ve made it past the recruit class and are on the floor?

I am excited to get out there more! The incident could be completely different than you imagined. Every call you get brings the excitement and adrenaline. I am also excited to see where my firefighting journey takes me.

Firefighter Spotlight- Sean McKinlay (R30)

How long have you lived in the Okanagan?

I moved to the Okanagan four years ago. I’m originally from B.C., but I spent a good portion of my life living in Alberta.

What first got you interested in being part of WKFR?

When I moved here, I saw the impact that wildfires and other emergencies had on the community. I wanted to help in any way I could. Joining WKFR felt like a way to serve the community and support the people who live here.

What are your long-term goals in the department?

My long-term goal is to contribute as much as I can to the department and continue developing my skills. Ideally, I would also like to pursue the opportunity to work full-time in the fire service.

What’s your day job?

I’m a landscape and farm manager at Off the Grid Winery. You can usually find me on a tractor in the vineyards, maintaining the property, or bringing hay to the animals.

What did you find was the best part about recruit class?

The best part of recruit class was getting to know everyone and watching the entire group’s skills develop over the six months. It was rewarding to see how far everyone progressed, from the first day of training through to the live fire days.

What were your biggest challenges?

One of my biggest challenges was getting back into the books and finding enough time to study the material required to be successful throughout the course. Balancing work, training, and studying required a lot of organization and commitment.

What would be your advice for new recruits signing up to successfully get through the 6 months of training?

Work as hard as possible, be on time, stay committed, and be willing to learn from every experience. Ask questions, support your other recruits, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The six months go by quickly, so give it your best effort every day.

What are you most excited about now that you’ve made it through recruit class and are on the floor?

I’m most excited to be on the floor, show up for the community, and put everything I learned during recruit class into work. I’m also looking forward to continuing to grow, build my experience, and contribute to the department as part of the team.

Doors open at 5:30 and we will be running a kid friendly less scary show until 7:00, After that, be prepared to be scared - we will be running at full scare show from 7:30 until 9! 🧡 Truth and Reconciliation Day | September 30

Today, the West Kelowna Paid on Call Fire Fighters Association pauses to remember.
We honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and the families and communities who continue to carry the lasting impacts of that history.

Truth and Reconciliation asks more of us than simply remembering. It asks us to listen, learn, acknowledge the truth, and take meaningful steps toward reconciliation.
As firefighters and members of the West Kelowna community, we believe in looking after one another, standing together in difficult times, and serving our community with respect and compassion. Today, that commitment includes recognizing the experiences of Indigenous peoples and understanding that reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility shared by all of us.

We encourage our members and our community to take time today to learn, reflect, listen to Indigenous voices, and consider what reconciliation means in our own lives and in the communities we serve.

We remember.
We honour.
We listen.
We learn.
We walk forward together.
