stunx - Beaver 🦫

As the waters cool and winter approaches, stunx teaches us patience, cooperation, and the importance of preparing for the season ahead. Through their teachings, we are reminded to build in a good way — not just for ourselves, but for all our relatives who depend on these lands and waters.

Watch these beavers make their way through the kłusxnitkʷ Okanagan Lake Dam Fish Passage! Just like Stunx, the passage plays a role in supporting the tmixʷ - all living things and keeping our waterways connected.

kiɁlawnaɁ – Grizzly Bears are in the Okanagan! 🐻

Help us better understand grizzly activity in the area by reporting sightings. Remember - always keep your distance and never approach a bear.

As fall progresses, bears are feeding more as they prepare for winter hibernation. They may be more active, more defensive, and more likely to enter urban areas in search of food.

Stay bear aware. It’s our responsibility to help keep ourselves and bears safe.

After years of effort by the Syilx Okanagan Nation to reintroduce salmon back to the region, sc’win (sockeye) and ntytyix (chinook) salmon are now returning and spawning in many of the rivers and creeks throughout the Okanagan.

To spawn, salmon lay their eggs in gravel nests in the riverbeds of various waterways called “redds”. They may spawn from September to early November.

We are asking people and dogs to stay out of the water in these areas during the fall to protect the salmon’s eggs and thus their ability to reproduce.

❗️Stepping on a redd can immediately damage up to 47% of eggs
❗️Dead eggs will infect the others and often kill the whole nest

If you or your dogs want to go in the water, please consider going to locally designated human or dog beaches, as these most often do not contain salmon spawning grounds.

Together we can make sure that salmon a safe home for their eggs and continue to return for generations to come!

Behind the Scenes of Broodstock!

Our crew is hard at work as part of the kł cp̓əlk̓ stim̓ — Cause to Come Back initiative!

We are collecting eggs and milt from adult salmon in the sq̓awsitkʷ -Okanagan River to support salmon recovery and help bring them back for future generations. ❤️

How can you help? Keep yourself, kids, and pets out of the river and stay on designated paths to protect salmon redds (egg nests).
