Why should I care about consent?

Learn more about why we chose the theme “Consent is Everyone’s Right” for Take Back the Night this year!

Consent isn’t just one thing, it shows up in every part of your life!

In your relationships, in your workplace, in your home, in your community, consent should always be there.

When consent is respected we all gain better trust, deeper connections, greater joy, and more freedom.

Consent isn't a privilege, it's a right. One that belongs to every person, in every language, in every community.

No matter where you come from, what language you speak, or what your story is - you are entitled to the same rights, dignity, and freedom as anyone else.

Consent is how we build a better world.
Join us the evening of September 17th to stand up for consent, safety, and freedom.

We will be gathering at Hamilton City Hall Forecourt on Thursday September 17th at 6pm for our community gathering, followed by a rally and march through the streets! We have so much in store for this powerful night, learn more at www.sacha.ca/blog/TBTN2026

It’s back to school season which is exciting and should be a joyful time!

For many though it is also a scary time.

The first 6-8 weeks of the fall semester, starting with orientation, are known as the red zone for post-secondary institutions.

More than 50% of sexual assaults involving a post-secondary student occur during this time.

Why does this happen?
* Consent is not fully understood, practiced, or modelled
* R**e culture normalizes sexual violence
* Pressure to fit in, meet new people and try new things
* Pressure to drink alcohol and/or use drugs (which can be used by perpetrators to facilitate sexual violence, but are not a cause of violence)
* Limited social supports and close friends as many students are away from home for the first time
* Belief in myths about sexual violence such as the belief that strangers are the ones who cause harm or it couldn’t happen to me
* Above all – perpetrators choosing to take advantage of these vulnerabilities

What can we do about it? Learn about Bystander Intervention, Consent, and Building Consent Culture, workshops offered by SACHA! Reducing isolation and caring for and looking out for each other is how we keep us safe!
