What kind of impact will we leave for future generations? đź’›

This Leave a Legacy Month, we’re reflecting on the people helping shape a stronger future for women, girls, and gender-diverse people in our community.

For 137 years, supporters of YWCA Hamilton have helped create safer futures through housing, violence prevention, employment support, youth programs, and more. Legacy giving is one way that impact can continue for generations to come.

A legacy gift doesn’t require great wealth — it can be as simple as including YWCA Hamilton in your Will or naming the organization as a beneficiary on a policy or account.

Every future gift helps ensure women and families in Hamilton continue to have somewhere to turn. Visit the link in bio to learn more.

Not only is it Sam Livingstone’s first time participating in Walk a Mile in Their Shoes, she is also the captain for Team Alectra! Talk about kicking off what will, hopefully, be a ongoing participation with Walk a Mile on a high note! Sam is excited to come together as a community, increase awareness, raise funds, and show support for survivors. We can’t wait to see the new and creative ways Sam will be fundraising for the walk.

On June 9, Sam and the Alectra team will be at City Hall to show survivors that they are not alone. You can register to participate or to donate now at walkamile.ca

Yesterday, we recognized International Supervised Visitation Awareness Day, named by the Supervised Visitation Network.

At YWCA Hamilton, we provide safe, neutral, trauma-informed spaces where children and parents can maintain connection during complex and often difficult circumstances through our Supervised Parenting Services.

Supervised visitation is a vital service that focuses on safety while maintaining parent-child relationships when unsupervised contact is not possible. It creates a child-focused environment focused on safety, neutrality and meaningful connection.

This work reduces conflict, strengthens safer interactions, and centres the emotional and physical safety of children. We honour the families who engage in this service and the staff who hold these spaces with care, skill, and compassion every day.

On May 21, we wear orange for Supervised Visitation Awareness Day. Orange represents visibility, safety, and hope.

Supervised visitation matters. Safety and connection can exist together.

It’s a day of celebration here at YWCA Hamilton! This morning, we broke ground on The Oakwood Project on Barton St. E. and shared some very exciting news.

The Oakwood Project will receive $35M in capital funding through the Federal Government’s Affordable Housing Fund, announced by MP Aslam Rana.

Mayor Andrea Horwath also previously announced $6.9 million for The Oakwood Project through the City’s Housing Secretariat and Councillor Nrinder Nann has committed Ward 3 discretionary funds toward the outdoor landscaping.

The Oakwood project is a transformational supportive housing development that will house 84 women and families and provide community services for the surrounding neighbourhood. We are so proud to begin the construction to bring this project to life.

Thanks to the generosity and compassion of employees and organizers of the Dress for Success Clothing and Book Drive, L3Harris WESCAM has donated hundreds of professional clothing items along with wonderful collection of books to support our programs.

These donations will help participants of The Opportunities Program to feel confident and prepared as they pursue new career opportunities. They will also benefit members of the Senior Active Living Centre giving them new materials to read, learn from and enjoy.

We want to especially thank Maria Inacio and the members of the Women who Strive: Empowering, Enhancing & Encouraging Other Women committee for championing and coordinating this initiative.

Donation drives like these make a meaningful difference for so many in or community. If you’re interested in organizing your own workplace or community donation drive to support YWCA Hamilton programs, you can contact Corporate Community and Engagement Coordinator lsiino @ ywcahamilton.org.
