When Darren reached out to Kemp Care Network, he was carrying several losses at once.

He had lost people who felt like parental figures in his life, and he knew he needed support. Through one-on-one grief counselling and the Parent Loss Group, Darren found space to talk, listen and begin making sense of what he was feeling.

“The group support really helped me realize that I’m really not alone in this,” he said.

For Darren, support also helped him name what he was feeling instead of keeping it all inside. “Once you vocalize things, it feels so much better to actually get it out,” he said.

His message to anyone unsure about reaching out for grief support is simple:
“Do it. The fact that you’re thinking about it shows that you need it.”

Kemp Care Network CEO Danielle Zucchet recently spoke with Hamilton City Magazine about the personal experiences that brought her to hospice work, the care and programs offered across Kemp Care Network and the progress of Keaton’s House – Paul Paletta Children’s Hospice.

Danielle also shares why families deserve another trusted care option alongside home and hospital, and why hospice care is about quality of life, dignity and choice.

Carter was Christine and Kevin’s youngest child. At just five and a half months old, he experienced a traumatic brain injury that left him with severe disabilities and complex medical needs.

His family was told he may not live past age three. He lived to nearly 17.

For Christine and Kevin, caring for Carter meant years of love, devotion and around-the-clock responsibility, often with little support.

Without access to pediatric hospice or specialized respite care, families like Carter’s carry so much on their own.

Keaton’s House – Paul Paletta Children’s Hospice will help change that by giving children with serious illness and medical complexity, and the families who care for them, a trusted place for comfort, respite and support.
