Camp Keaton Hamilton

Camp Keaton Hamilton Camp Keaton is an annual 3 day NO-FEE bereavement camp for children and youth (ages 7-17) who have experienced the death of someone close to them.

Camp Keaton Hamilton is a program of the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice. The camp is facilitated by bereavement professionals and trained volunteers of the Dr. bob Kemp Hospice. Camp Keaton 2020 will take place Friday, June 5th to Sunday, June 7th. Our Story

Since 2013, we have been offering a children’ bereavement camp because we know that children grieve differently and often through play. We first partnered with the Moyer Foundation and their Camp Erin. The camp was named in memory of Erin Metcalf, a remarkable young woman who died of cancer at the age of 17 who often expressed concern for how children would cope after the death of a loved one.

Camp Keaton Hamilton is named after a local boy who inspired others, Keaton Millar. Keaton was a vivacious and spunky 4 year old when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2007. He went through 3 years of radiation and chemotherapy in Hamilton, Ontario. Seven year old Keaton lost his courageous battle on December 4, 2010 leaving behind his family, many young friends and his 3 year old sister Ella.

He loved to laugh and live life to the fullest taking every opportunity to stop and smell the flowers. He touched many lives during his short time here in this realm.

Keaton’s nickname was “Key” and thus we have incorporated the symbol of the key into the new camp logo. For Camp Keaton the symbolism of an old key represents the safe passage from one realm to the next.
