Building Hope is a Nazarene Compassionate Ministry Center serving the Greater Edmonton Area. Building Hope started with a location in the Beverly area in 2000 providing hot meals, drop-in activities and a clothing and food bank to families in need. Building Hope expanded to a second location in Sherwood Park in 2013 and that location offers a variety of counseling services. Building Hope serves to fulfill a simple mission “In the Name of Jesus, we will love”

If you're looking for ideas of how to support a loved one who is struggling, here are some simple suggestions. The list is not exhaustive. It's important that we respect boundaries that others might set regarding their privacy. And we must never take on more than we can handle.

There is evidence that the more severe a mental illness, the harder it is to maintain stable housing. Likewise, finding stable housing has a positive effect on those with less severe mental struggles. Both of these situations make it clear that housing is foundational in a person's mental health.

At Building Hope, we do what we can to support those who are challenged by mental health and housing issues. We are grateful for all those who support this work and help us bring hope and help to Northeast Edmonton.

Recently, our Executive Director arrived at Building Hope on a bitterly cold day when we were technically closed. He found a man standing outside—no coat, no protection from the wind, and nowhere else to go.

In that moment, the "stats" didn't matter. What mattered was finding a sweater, a heavy coat, and a bag of food to get him through the night.

We are seeing more and more faces from outside Beverly as other shelters and centers across Edmonton close or move. We know this puts a new kind of pressure on our neighborhood, and we feel that weight, too. But stories like this remind us why we stay. We’ve never served this many people before, and for many, we are the only "safe landing" left.

The need is growing—and we want to be ready to meet it with dignity, not just for our guests, but for our community.

Recently, we’ve seen a record number of guests. Some are familiar faces, and many are new people displaced as other services in the city shift. While this growth brings new challenges to our neighborhood, it also brings new opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

It’s a common question: Is substance use a cause of homelessness, or a result of it?

The reality is a difficult cycle. The trauma and stress of not having a safe place to sleep often lead neighbors to seek any form of relief. Unfortunately, that relief often leads to chronic illness and deeper mental health struggles.

At Building Hope, we know these challenges are complicated. But we believe that structure and support are the first steps toward a healthier state of mind. Whether it’s through accessible healthcare or simply a safe place to be known, we are working to provide a path out of the cycle.

It’s easy to feel "small" when the needs of Edmonton feel so big. But we’ve learned that hope isn't always found in grand gestures—it’s nurtured in the small, sacred rhythms.

In our little corner of Northeast Edmonton, a routine of comfort unfolds three days a week. It’s the steam from a hot coffee, the predictable seat at the table, and the companion who knows your name.

For a few hours, the chaos of the streets fades. Our space becomes a "safe place to land" where nourishment isn't just about food—it’s about dignity and self-care in a world that can feel incredibly lonely.

Our Dream: We are praying for a part-time chaplain to walk alongside our neighbors—someone to offer steady spiritual and social guidance right where they are.

As the temperatures rise, staying hydrated becomes even more crucial, especially for those who are homeless or nearly homeless. Access to fresh, cool water can make a huge difference in these hotter months.

At Building Hope Compassionate Ministry in Northeast Edmonton, we’re committed to providing this essential resource. But we need your help! We're asking for donations of bottled water to support our efforts to bring hope and help to those in need. .

Donations of bottled water can be dropped off at 3831 116th Ave, Edmonton Monday to Wednesday from 9 to 3. Or you can call 1 780-479-4504 to set up a time for dropoff.

We work hard to help where we can, but mental health supports are hard to access for so many, and especially for those who live unhoused with food insecurity.

One of the reasons we dream of having a staff chaplain available when we are serving meals is to at least offer some support and someone to talk to. What we do have right now is a community where people, hopefully, will feel less alone.

We are always looking for support to realize the dream of providing more support for our clients. You can help.
