of Providence, commonly known as Wings, stands for Women - in - need - growing - stronger. Wings’ mission is ‘to provide comprehensive transitional programs and independent living in a safe, secure, supportive and healthy environment for women with children who have experienced family violence’. Families stay at Wings for 6 months and during that time they attend programming which involves group and individual counseling. Topics discussed in group help to foster parenting and life skills, as well as help mothers understand and better cope with family violence. Kids group and youth programming discuss topics such as self-esteem, the family and feelings. It also allows the children and youth to participate in activities and enjoy special outings. In June of 2012, Wings officially opened The Home Next Door – a 29 unit, affordable housing complex which provides a safe and secure home in a healthy, supportive community, to women with children to promote continued healing and independence. The first of its kind in Edmonton, The Home Next Door meets the critical need for long term housing, addresses multi-generational poverty, and has great potential for positive social change within the community.
