As we are starting preparations for another school year, we welcome our community to consider contributing some school safe (nut free) lunch making foods, snacks and easy supper contributions.

We know that children can’t learn without having their basic needs met first.

Nearly 4 in 10 children in Nova Scotia, approximately 68,000 children, are living in food-insecure households according to the 2025 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Nova Scotia.

Please consider supporting the Cole Harbour Community Fridge as part of your regular and back to school shopping if you are in a position to do so.

Great ideas of contributions:
Fruit cups, yogurt, juice boxes, school snacks, sandwich meats, condiments like mayo and mustard, fresh fruits and veggies, crackers, cheese, muffins, granola and other bars, canned soups and pastas, noodles and sauces, loafs of bread, butter, margerine, milk, cereals and more!

You can drop off your contributions any time with no appointment at 915 Cole Harbour Road, in the side parking lot of the closest to Otago. EMT donations are also always appreciated at: [email protected]

We believe that all people deserve food security. We deeply appreciate your support.

🍟 Frozen French-Fry Free Give-away! 🍟

We are stoked to be able to announce another free frozen French fry give-away, with thanks to our incredible friends at Second Harvest who rescue good food and help get it into communities where it’s needed most and the Halifax Community Food Truck, we’ve been offered another HUGE donation of frozen French Fries!

We just can’t say no to the awesome offer of free food but as with the last time, we really don’t have space to store this many bags of frozen fries so we’re running another French-Fry Give-away event, a lil fun community giveaway and food drive.

Here’s the plan:

Come by the Cole Harbour Community Fridge on Friday, August 20th between 5pm and 7pm to pick up some frozen fries, while supplies last.

If you’re able and wish to, you are welcome to bring:
🥫 Food donations to swap/trade for fries
💰 A financial contribution to help keep the Community Fridge stocked and running.

You absolutely do NOT have to donate anything at all to attend. Just bring your awesome self. We’d love to see and want you to get some free frozen potatoes!

📍 Where: Cole Harbour Community Fridge
915 Cole Harbour Road (CH Rd and Otago)

🕒 When: Thursday, August 20, 2026
We will start unloading and giving away when our delivery arrives at about 5:00pm until 7:00pm or until we run out.

Depending on the turnout and what is delivered, we may need to limit the number of bags per household so that we can share the potato wealth.

We think that the bags of fries are bigger this time (6lbs) and in clear bags.

Come by and see us, grab some fries, say hello, support if you’re able, and help us make sure this generous donation doesn’t go to waste. 🍟

Hope to see you on our second Frozen French-Fry Free Give-away.

*NOTE: limits may be required, only available for pick-up during designated time/date, while supplies last*

Kwe’ / Greetings!

Is your backyard garden doing well? Do you have too much produce and need to thin out some of your crops? Do you love to garden but don’t have a space?

The Mimajuinu'k Community Garden, located behind SRB (at the back of 16 Evergreen Dr) is intended to help support food security for our neighbours and the Cole Harbour Community Fridge.

Operating with the same philosophy of community care, kindness and mutual aid, we welcome our community to “Take What You Need, and Leave What You Can” at the Community Garden.

If you want to share some of your garden plant wealth or your love of gardening,
or you want to access some free food resources grown with community love - you’re welcome to pop over and contribute, w**d, water, pick and enjoy.

Already harvesting your own garden?
Extras you have harvested that are ready to be enjoyed can be donated directed to the Cole Harbour Community Fridge, now located at 915 Cole Harbour Road, at your convenience. It is helpful to bundle and label garden produce to indicate what it is and when it was harvested when donating.

You don’t need an appointment at the Mimajuinu'k Community Garden or the Cole Harbour Community Fridge to donate or access.

Please remember to limit contributions at the community fridge to appropriate (new, not open/not expired) food and personal care items. Lately we have been getting baby items, shoes, boots and other clothing items which have to be redistributed or discarded.

🍟 French-Fry Fun Friday Food Fundraiser! 🍟

Who doesn’t love an excessive alliteration? 😄 well, I sure do!!

Hopefully that title caught your attention because we have some exciting news…

Thanks to our incredible friends at Second Harvest who rescue good food and help get it into communities where it’s needed most, we’ve been offered a HUGE donation of McCain frozen potato products, which we think is mostly French Fries!

Since we don’t have a lot of freezer space to store it all and there was no way we were going to say no to this amazing opportunity, we’re turning Friday into French-Fry Day, a lil fun community giveaway and food drive.

Here’s the plan:

Come by the Cole Harbour Community Fridge on Friday, July 17 between 3pm and 5pm to pick up some frozen potato products, while supplies last.

If you’re able and wish to, you are welcome to bring:
🥫 Food donations to swap

Happy July!!

Here’s a compilation of food resources available in Dartmouth with thanks to our friends at the library for diligently producing this updated list monthly.

The Helpline can be reached at 211 by text or phone, or 211.ca and is also a great resource.

Food security is for everyone who needs support and we are so grateful for all of these amazing resources that are available for our community to access food.

Happy Anniversary!

June 30th marked one year since we moved to our location at 915 Cole Harbour Road.
We are located in the corner of the parking lot closest to Otago.

We wanted to extend our gratitude to everyone who has been instrumental to this project and all that we do together at the Cole Harbour Fridge since the very beginning and as we continue to move forward together to make food access and food security a reality in our community.

Very special thanks to the Forest Hills Fellowship Baptist Church for hosting us on your property and for allowing us to use your indoor space for our very successful, impactful and enormously appreciated Square Roots produce bundle program.

We are so appreciative of our CHCF community, volunteers, and for support that we receive as a grass roots, non-profit.

Contributions are always graciously welcome by dropping off fresh, unopened food directly to the Fridge anytime or sending financial contributions by EMT to [email protected]

Thanks!
