TEPF congratulates Ezekiel Burr on receiving the Derald Fretts Memorial Bursary! Ezekiel completed TEPF’s Pipe Trades program and is now a third-year plumbing apprentice with Balzers Canada. He is currently working at Calgary’s Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Facility, where his team is helping complete the mechanical infrastructure for the facility.

Ezekiel’s interest in the trades started early, working with his hands and building things in the garage with his dad. He knew he wanted a career that would keep him active and allow him to learn on the job. “I think it definitely changed my life story. The fact that it gave me a career path to follow, it gave me something that I wanted to learn, that I wanted to persevere at.” Ezekiel appreciated that the Trades Careers program focused on practical fundamentals, including reading a tape measure, calculating fitting allowances, threading pipe and working safely, skills directly applicable on the job site. His advice to students considering the program is to approach it with an open mind and an eagerness to learn.

Looking ahead, Ezekiel hopes to become dual ticketed in plumbing and pipefitting, giving him more options as his career develops.

We caught up with Ezekiel on site along with his foreman, Logan Bachand (pictured, right), who also spoke about the value of giving high school students opportunities to experience the skilled trades firsthand and determine whether a trades career is right for them.
Congratulations, Ezekiel, as you continue your apprenticeship journey!

The Derald Fretts Memorial Bursary pays tribute to the immense love, passion, and dedication Derald Fretts bestowed upon students, education, and the Alberta community. Awarding a $500 bursary in his name each year, we honour Derald’s memory as a well-loved Calgary teacher and CBE administrator and continue to support his legacy of inspiring and elevating students’ successes.

Happy Alberta Apprenticeship Day! Established by the YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) in 2022, this annual day recognizes the skilled tradespeople who help keep our economy strong.

Through our Trades Careers program, TEPF helps build Alberta’s skilled trades workforce by introducing young people to career opportunities, connecting them with industry training, and supporting their transition into apprenticeship. We’re proud to work with our training and industry partners to help new apprentices begin rewarding careers in the skilled trades.

Today our team will be celebrating with our Trades Careers training partners at Alberta Pipe Trades College in Edmonton; photos to come!

TEPF congratulates Nowell on receiving a Trades Careers Apprenticeship Bursary! The TEPF Trades Careers Apprenticeship Bursary is available to students for each level of apprenticeship education, to a maximum of four bursaries (total of $2,000).

Nowell completed TEPF’s Carpentry program while in high school after learning about the skilled trades through his Off Campus Coordinator. Although he had always thought college would be his next step, the program opened his eyes to another path that better suited his hands-on learning style.

“It gave me more clarity. You can't really know the trade you get into until you actually do it. In this program, I was actually able to do hands-on work and see what it would be like.”

Nowell is now a first-year Electrical apprentice and has a clear vision for where he hopes his career will take him. His goal is to complete his training at SAIT, become a journeyperson and earn his Red Seal, with longer-term plans to start his own company and eventually become a construction manager.

Nowell credits some of the guidance he received through the program with helping him map out those next steps.

“Dave Pocock, from AIT [Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training], gave us so much information. It was so valuable. I followed his advice: create a plan. Now, I have that plan.”
