🍂🧡 Happy Thanksgiving from Knox! 🧡🍂

We’re giving thanks for our wonderful community, the love we share and the people who make Knox a place of welcome, connection and belonging. We hope you’re enjoying a lovely long weekend… even if Calgary has decided to skip fall and head straight into winter! ❄️😂

Today is also National Coming Out Day 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ A day to celebrate the courage it takes to live authentically and remind everyone that you deserve to be loved, accepted and celebrated exactly as you are. At Knox, we’re proud to be an affirming community where everyone belongs.

Stay warm, stay grateful and look out for one another! 🧡

This Sunday is Thanksgiving Sunday, October 11! 🍂🫶🏼
Worship is at 10:30 am. If you can, bring something for the Calgary Food Bank. Then go and eat too much with people you love, which is also a form of thanks. 🫕🍪🍗

It is also National Coming Out Day. Whoever you are, you are welcome in this place.🥰

🏳️‍🌈✨ This Sunday, October 11 is National Coming Out Day!

First observed in 1988, National Coming Out Day was created to celebrate coming out and raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ community. It began as a reminder that visibility matters and that sharing our stories can help create a world where people feel less alone. 💗 The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of the 1987 Second National March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights.

Coming out is deeply personal, and there’s no right time, right way or obligation to do so. Whether you’re out, questioning, not ready or simply figuring things out, you are loved, valued and welcome here at Knox. 🌈🫶

Eleven colours, one at a time. Yellow. 💛

On the wall, yellow is sunlight, joy, and life outside of binaries: non-binary, intersex, pan. Inside the building there is a banner hanging from the loft that says one word, JOY, and it has said it for years.

A lot of churches lead with seriousness. We would rather lead with this.

Every child matters. 🧡

Today is Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Treaty Seven flag hangs from the east balcony of our sanctuary, signed at Blackfoot Crossing in 1877, and it hangs there so that we do not get to forget what this church was part of, or what it owes.

We are all treaty people. Connection and Reflection is at 12:30 pm Today with Gloria Snow, if you want somewhere to sit with it today.

This week, Wednesday, September 30, is Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

At Knox United Church we will wear orange, for the children who were taken to residential schools and the ones who never came home, and because every child matters. Connection and Reflection at 12:30 pm on Wednesday is a place to sit with the day, with Gloria Snow. 🧡

The United Church of Canada ran residential schools. We say that out loud, because reconciliation starts with the truth.

This Sunday, after 10:30 worship, we go outside. 🌲

Kainai Elder Saa’kokoto of the Tall People Clan of the Blood Tribe visits Knox United Church on September 27. Light lunch in the Labyrinth Room at noon, then everyone moves to the Knox Garden for Blackfoot teachings and language, until about 2:30.

It comes three days before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and the Treaty Seven flag on our east balcony is the reason an afternoon like this matters here. Open to all. Dress for the weather! 🧡

Once a month, on a Friday evening, the lights stay on late at Knox United Church. 🌈

Affirming Open Sanctuary, Friday September 25. Candles lit, refreshments on the table, and an evening made of conversation and belonging. Sit with people you know, meet people you do not, or take the quiet corner. Open Space, in the plainest sense of the words.

For the 2S and LGBTQIA+ community, friends and allies. Come as you are. ❤️
