We are grateful to the Brant Waterways Foundation for their generous $5,000 grant supporting the restoration and naturalization of a wet meadow area in the gardens.
The funding supported the purchase of native plant material, including 14 shrubs, 56 grasses, sedges and ferns, and 285 perennials, along with 10 yards of woodland mulch.
The native species were selected to support biodiversity, pollinators and wildlife habitat, while improving the ecological function of a persistently wet area on our campus.
This project also provided opportunities for volunteers and students to take part in hands-on environmental stewardship. Together, they helped prepare the garden beds, remove existing sod, install the plants and apply mulch.
The restored area also contributes to the therapeutic greenspace at St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre, providing residents, families, staff and visitors with a more diverse, natural setting to connect with nature.
Thank you to the Brant Waterways Foundation for supporting this important project and helping us enhance both the ecological and therapeutic value of our outdoor spaces.
