💙 Celebrating Greenbrier Elementary School! 💙

We were so proud to see one of our very own Brant Food For Thought schools featured by Sustain Ontario for the wonderful work happening through their snack program! 🍎🥕🍌

At Greenbrier Elementary, their snack program is about so much more than food. It’s about making sure every student feels welcome and has access to something nutritious when they need it.

With the help of dedicated grandparents and student volunteers, Greenbrier has created a program where students are part of the solution, delivering snack bins to classrooms, helping collect them, and making sure food is put to good use. 💙

This is exactly what we love about Student Nutrition Programs: schools, volunteers, students and community coming together to nourish children and create a stronger school community.

Congratulations to the Greenbrier team for the incredible work you’re doing! 👏

We’re so proud to support you and to see the difference your program is making, one snack at a time. 🌟

Squash Spotlight! A Seasonal Favourite Packed with Nutrition
Squash is more than a cozy fall favourite—it’s a delicious, versatile vegetable with plenty to offer!

Nutrient-rich: Squash is an excellent source of beta carotene and potassium, and a source of vitamin C and folacin.

So many varieties: Ontario has a wonderful selection, including Butternut, Buttercup, Royal Acorn, Pumpkin, Hubbard, Hercules, Kindred, Delicious and Boston Marrow.

Easy to prepare: Roast it, mash it, add it to soups, or turn it into a comforting squash pie. A little maple syrup, cinnamon or nutmeg can bring out its natural sweetness.

Did You Know? Cantaloupe vs. Muskmelon

Cantaloupe is a type of muskmelon — but not all muskmelons are cantaloupes!
Muskmelon is the name for a whole family of melons. Cantaloupe is one member of that family, along with varieties such as honeydew, Persian melon and Santa Claus melon.

Cantaloupes typically have a netted rind and sweet, orange flesh.
Muskmelons can have smooth, ribbed or glossy skin, with flesh ranging from green to pale yellow and flavours from mild to very sweet.

Both are low in calories, high in water and packed with nutrients, including vitamins A and C and potassium. They’re also high in potassium and provide folacin, making them a nutritious choice for breakfast, snacks or dessert.

What’s the difference?
🍈 Muskmelons have a sweet, rich flavour, a large seed cavity and a netted exterior.
🍈 Cantaloupes have a milder flavour, a scaly exterior and often deep grooves.
🍈 Winter melons have a mild, sweet flavour with a hard exterior and flesh ranging from white to pale orange or light green.

When choosing a melon, look for firm skin without soft spots and a sweet, fragrant aroma. Store melons in the refrigerator for several days once ripe.
Enjoy muskmelon simply on its own, add it to a fresh fruit salad with mint, or enjoy it as a refreshing breakfast or dessert.
