๐ŸŒฟ What Is Blue-Green Algae? ๐ŸŒฟ

Despite its name, blue-green algae is actually a type of bacteria called cyanobacteria that naturally occurs in lakes, ponds, rivers, and wetlands. Under the right conditions (warm temperatures, calm water, and excess nutrients) it can grow rapidly and form what is known as a blue-green algae bloom.

Blue-green algae blooms can make water appear:
๐Ÿ’š Bright green, blue-green, or turquoise
๐Ÿ’š Like pea soup, green paint, or floating grass clippings
๐Ÿ’š Covered with a surface scum or mat

Some blooms can produce toxins that may be harmful to people, pets, livestock, and wildlife. That's why it's important to avoid contact with water that appears to have a bloom and to keep animals away from affected areas.

Help protect our lakes and waterways by reducing nutrient runoff, properly disposing of waste, and maintaining healthy shoreline vegetation.

Learn more about blue-green algae and how to recognize a bloom in your area.

Friday, May 29 โ€“ Wildfire smoke can change quickly โ€” be ready to respond. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) makes it easy to understand local air quality during wildfire smoke events. Rated on a scale from 1 to 10+, the AQHI provides clear health guidance for both the general public and those more at-risk โ€” helping you decide when to adjust outdoor activities or take extra precautions. Because conditions can shift throughout the day, the AQHI is updated regularly so you can make informed choices to protect your health.
Stay informed. Stay prepared. Breathe easier. ๐Ÿ’™
