Honouring the children who survived Indian Residential Schools. Remembering those who didn't.

In light of the findings of unmarked graves at Indian Residential School sites, our grassroots movement began. Our goals are:

To create and support community activities/events that honour survivors of Indian Residential Schools and to remember those who did not;

To foster an environment of truth telling with respect and understanding;

To provide education/awareness relating to the impacts of Indian Residential School Survivors;

To embrace cultures and traditions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis People;

To create a public space centered around healing and reconciliation that includes history, culture and traditional healing components, that is easily accessible to the general public and local schools.

People drink and still go to lodge because the lodge is not for people who already have it all together. The lodge is for the ones who are hurting.
Alcohol is a spirit that was brought to us, it is not from our original teachings. It makes you forget who you are for a little while. It covers pain, grief, trauma, that feeling of not belonging anywhere. A lot of us carry that from our families, from boarding schools, from everything that happened to our people.
The lodge is the opposite spirit. Inipi is where you go to remember. To clean yourself, to pray, to cry, to ask Creator for help. You don't go because you are already well, you go because you are sick and you need medicine. That is why they say the lodge is a hospital for the spirit.
That is why both can live in the same person. In their daily life they are still fighting and they fall into drinking to survive the day. In their spirit they still know they need prayer, so they crawl back to the lodge to ask for strength. That back and forth is not being fake, that is what trying looks like. Healing is not a straight road.
Inside the lodge itself there is still respect. You don't bring that alcohol spirit in there. That is why most lodges ask you to come clean for a few days before you enter, because inside you are praying not just for yourself but for everyone. What you do outside while you are still on that hard road, that is between you and Creator.
We don't turn someone away for being broken. If they are sincere and still struggling, we pray that one day the lodge medicine becomes stronger in them than the alcohol medicine. Everyone of you are welcomed at our lodge always regardless of who you are or where you come from or what you have done.
