We are also working to educate Canadians about calls for culling seals and sea lions in the Gulf of St. Watch our new short film "Seals and Sea Lions: Scoundrels or Scapegoats?" on Youtube to learn about the calls for culls and increased killing of seals and sea lions, including the harp seals and grey seals on the East coast and harbor seals, California sea lions, and Steller sea lions in the Pacific.

Canada had several harp seals in captivity, including very long-lived seals, but 2 years after moving the last 2 of them to New Brunswick, they have died, one at the old age of 35, but the other at the age of 24.

Tyler and Deane, long-time residents of Memorial’s Ocean Sciences Centre, have died in New Brunswick nearly two years after relocation

There has been a surge in harp seal pup killing over the past week. We are working on getting to the bottom of this. By now, there should be very little killing of these defenseless pups.
The latest number from the DFO: 23,515 harp seal pups have been killed this spring.

The sealers of Canada are still killing defenseless harp seal pups. Now (as of May 1st), they have killed and "landed" 20,694 baby seals. This means they have probably killed over 21,700 seal pups, with the additional pups being "struck and lost."
We need your help to end this wasteful, reckless, cruel slaughter. Tell your MP's - end this now!

Is this a joke? https://weareaquaculture.com/news/sustainability/canadas-northern-cod-fishery-enters-the-process-for-msc-certification
Canada's east coast fishermen killed so many North Atlantic cod that the population collapsed 34 years ago. The collapse was a 99% loss of cod biomass. Think about that - 99% of the cod gone thanks to fishermen. But they couldn't leave the population alone to recover for more than 6 years. They chose instead to blame seals for preventing cod from recovering. Tired of waiting, and having destroyed many other fish populations in the meantime, they got the DFO to change the biological safety limit, called the Limit Reference Point (LRP). Now, instead of the cod population still being in the Critical Zone everywhere, it's in the Cautious Zone in one region, which fishermen see as a license to kill more of them. That's bad enough, but to find out that they're trying to get this "fishery" certified as "sustainable" by the Marine Stewardship Council is so ridiculous, this just seems like a bad joke.
Tell DFO to stop killing and blaming seals and keep fishermen out of policy making. https://impactinbox.org/emails/emails.php?cat=canadapols

The news was revealed in the Northern Cod 'Fishery Improvement Project' update at the Seafood Expo Global Barcelona.

The DFO now reports that 16,804 harp seal pups have been killed and "landed," meaning that well over 17,000 have been killed. The "struck and lost" seal pups suffer and die later from their wounds but aren't counted. Shouldn't the DFO keep track of all the killed seal pups? This is a species that is imperiled by climate change, overfishing, and high levels of killing of pups for so many years. Please tell your MP's to end the killing and require a full accounting of those who have been killed.

The DFO reports that 16,187 harp seal pups have been "landed." That means that about 17,000 seal pups have probably been killed since some are "struck and lost" and not counted in the official DFO number. These seal pups are drowning because of the lack of sturdy sea ice due to climate change. The pup survival numbers are way below normal as a result. On top of that, the DFO is allowing this slaughter. Please contact your MP's and tell them to end the seal "hunt" and pass a marine mammal protection law immediately.

Canada's DFO has announced that 15,550 harp seals have been "landed." This means that more than 15,500 harp seal pups have been killed. Guesstimates are that an additional 5% are "struck and lost." Please do your part to stop this atrocity. Find out how you can best help here:

Sealers in Canada have killed and "landed" 12,732 seal pups less than 2 months of age. This number does not include the pups who were "struck and lost" - meaning pups who were shot but only injured and slipped away. These pups will die slow, painful deaths and will never be counted in the total.
Harp seal pups are threatened by climate change and loss of prey due to overfishing, too. They need to be protected, not slaughtered. Please learn how you can help and spread the word.

A week of barbaric shooting and clubbing of defenseless harp seal pups is coming to an end. We will update you on the number of pups who were killed.
As this article discusses, harp seals not only are not overpopulated, they are a species in decline that must be protected, not slaughtered for their fur.

"or Antarctic species specifically, she said the new Red List updates represent what she described as the first clear evidence of climate change’s influence emerging in a major way — a pattern she noted already well documented among seal species in the North Atlantic Arctic, where hooded seals, harp seals and ringed seals have entered serious decline."

Two of Antarctica’s most iconic species have been elevated to endangered status as climate change strips away the sea ice and food supplies they depend on to survive, according to a new assessment published Thursday by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
