There’s something special about time with our wider Food for the Hungry family.

Our team was recently hosted by Korean Food for the Hungry (KFHI) to gather with colleagues from around the world.

Gatherings like this are one way we live out our values. God is our foundation, and we share that belief with partners across many countries. We have so much to learn from our international community who serve in different contexts. We wish to bring that knowledge home and apply it in our work.

Our host, Changnam Choi, CEO of Korean Food for the Hungry, said it beautifully in a note to everyone who attended:

“Each conversation reminded us of the extraordinary privilege of belonging to this global family, united not by nationality, culture, or organizational structure, but by our shared calling in Jesus Christ.”

Who decides what a community needs? In this case, the community did.

Ten women’s groups had already worked out what their communities needed. They put it in writing and chose who to bring alongside them. The communities designed this project, and ADEMI, FH Canada’s local partner in Guatemala, is carrying it out with them.

Small savings, lasting returns. 🐖

“Everything felt heavy,” remembers Marthe, a widow raising six children on her own in rural Rwanda. She worked long hours, but her harvests rarely lasted beyond a few months.

Then community leaders invited her to join a savings group that started in partnership with FH Canada. Her savings grew. With business training, she decided to invest in two pigs.

Soon, 12 piglets were running around her yard, and she could invest in a pig shelter.

“My children eat better now,” Marthe shared. “They go to school with confidence. When problems come, I can solve them.”

Thanks to Canadian donors who gave a Women’s Business Starter gift, Marthe is moving beyond poverty toward a resilient future.

Girls Education raised $94,888, making it the top gift in the Gift Guide. In Bangladesh, Harunur once believed early marriage was the only way to keep his daughters safe. When FH Canada partnered with his community to end child marriage, group discussions helped him see how it harms girls’ health, education and well-being. Today he’s an advocate for girls’ education, and his daughter Sadia is in grade nine.

We asked people in our partner communities how they would describe their own experiences of poverty. They spoke of feeling voiceless, inferior and emotionally shattered.

Poverty really is about more than a lack of money or stuff. That’s a symptom, not a cause. The roots of poverty are found in broken relationships, specifically four relationships that live at the core of our identity. Our relationships with God, with others, with ourselves and with creation.

When any one of these relationships breaks, we experience poverty. As Christians, we believe that Jesus makes healing in our personal lives and communities possible, and that he cares about ending all forms of poverty.

Together, we can break the cycle of poverty by addressing root causes, rather than patching up symptoms. We rally churches, strengthen marriages, teach conflict resolution, and help heal hearts so communities can make the changes they want.

This was the road to water in Bwira, Rwanda.

Before the pipeline, clean water meant a long walk over paths like this one, a full jerry can for the walk home, and the same trip again the next day.

It’s easy to overlook what that walk really costs. Every hour on the path is an hour away from the field, the market or the classroom. When every household has to walk for water, it starts to affect the whole community.

With FH’s support, a water pipeline now runs across Bwira’s hills, with taps built at points throughout the community. The hours the walk used to take now go back into work, school and family.

Food is where so much begins. It impacts a child’s energy at school, a family’s ability to plan beyond the next meal, and the skills a community passes down to the next generation.

645 million people faced hunger last year, but for three years in a row, that number has fallen. Every harvest a community grows for itself is part of that change.

This World Food Day, we’re thankful for the communities leading their own journey from poverty to hope, and for every Journey Partner who walks alongside them.

Tapisa Namono is a midwife at Bukiende Health Centre III in Mbale, Uganda. Many expectant mothers in her community couldn't make the long trip to the health centre, and her team of volunteers could only run four outreach visits a month. When she couldn't reach them, she prayed for them and asked them to call.

When FH began covering transport, her team grew to twelve outreaches a month, reaching even the farthest communities! FH also provided additional midwife training for Tapisa and supplied multivitamins for the expectant mothers she served, while community volunteers taught people how to care for mothers and newborns. Within two years, monthly deliveries at the health centre had doubled, and more children were keeping up with their vaccines.

She still prays for the mothers in her care, and she hopes to one day see 90% of mothers bringing their children to be immunized.

"Good health is wealth," she says.
