🌧️ Record-Breaking Rainfall, Recurring Disaster in the Chittagong Hill Tracts
The recent record-breaking rainfall has once again exposed the growing vulnerability of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. These flash floods are no longer caused by heavy rain alone. Deforestation, hill degradation, indiscriminate stone extraction, and the loss of native trees have weakened the hills' natural ability to absorb and retain water.
The result is devastating: flash floods, deadly landslides, damaged homes and infrastructure, crop losses, unsafe drinking water, and disrupted healthcare and communication.
Protecting the Chittagong Hill Tracts requires urgent action to restore forests, protect rivers and hills, and invest in long term, nature based climate adaptation. Without these measures, communities will continue to face greater risks with every extreme rainfall event.
Together, we must protect the hills to protect the people.

সাম্প্রতিক রেকর্ড-ভাঙা বৃষ্টিপাত আবারও পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের ক্রমবর্ধমান দুর্বলতাকে উন্মোচিত করেছে। এই আকস্মিক বন্যা এখন আর শুধু ভারী বৃষ্টির কারণে হচ্ছে না। বন উজাড়, পাহাড়ের অবক্ষয়, নির্বিচারে পাথর উত্তোলন এবং দেশীয় গাছপালার বিলুপ্তি পাহাড়ের পানি শোষণ ও ধরে রাখার প্রাকৃতিক ক্ষমতাকে দুর্বল করে দিয়েছে।
এর ফল ভয়াবহ: আকস্মিক বন্যা, প্রাণঘাতী ভূমিধস, ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত ঘরবাড়ি ও অবকাঠামো, ফসলহানি, অনিরাপদ পানীয় জল এবং স্বাস্থ্য ও যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থায় বিঘ্ন।
পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামকে রক্ষা করার জন্য বন পুনরুদ্ধার, নদী ও পাহাড় রক্ষা এবং দীর্ঘমেয়াদী, প্রকৃতি-ভিত্তিক জলবায়ু অভিযোজনে বিনিয়োগের জন্য জরুরি পদক্ষেপ প্রয়োজন। এই পদক্ষেপগুলো ছাড়া, প্রতিটি চরম বৃষ্টিপাতের ঘটনায় জনগোষ্ঠী আরও বড় ঝুঁকির সম্মুখীন হতে থাকবে।
মানুষকে রক্ষা করতে হলে, আমাদের অবশ্যই সম্মিলিতভাবে পাহাড়কে রক্ষা করতে হবে।
