🐦 It’s National Bird Week from 19-25th October, and the Great Aussie Bird Count officially starts today! As Australia's biggest citizen science event, we’d love our Noosa Biosphere community to be part of it.

All it takes is 20 minutes in your backyard, local park or favourite green space. Record what birds you see, and submit your count through the free Aussie Bird Count app or the web form. Not sure what you’re looking at? The built-in bird finder will help you work it out. You can count as many times as you like, and every count helps!

Why does it matter? Right now, one in six Australian birds faces the threat of extinction. Your 20 minutes helps build a national picture of how our feathered friends are faring.

Our biosphere is home to an incredible variety of birdlife, from the coast to the hinterland, so let’s contribute to this great research project 💚

Happy World Migratory Bird Day! 🐦

Right now, shorebirds that bred in Siberia, Mongolia and Alaska are arriving at the Noosa River mouth after flying thousands of kilometres. 

A few fast facts about Noosa’s shorebirds 👇

🪶 27 species of shorebirds are found around the Noosa Estuary and North Shore
🪶 18 are migratory and 9 are resident
🪶 Migratory arrivals peak October to November & Departures peak March to April
🪶 3 migratory species are listed as critically endangered - the Eastern Curlew (picture here), the Curlew Sandpiper, and Great Knot 
🪶 The Eastern Curlew is the largest of all the world’s shorebirds, and burns around 40% of its body weight on its 13,000 km journey
🪶 Habitat loss and human disturbance are the greatest threats to shorebird populations worldwide including here in Noosa

You can help by watching quietly from a distance, keeping dogs from chasing or disturbing birds, and respecting the North Shore Restricted Area at the Noosa River mouth.

It’s Mary River Month, and no better time to learn more about what’s happening upstream 💦

The Mary River catchment is home to three adjoining UNESCO Biospheres. On the Eastern side is our very own Noosa Biosphere where this part of the catchment contains core habitat for the critically endangered subtropical lowland rainforest that supports the endangered Mary River Cod, and is home to the Noosa River everglades wetland system.

Its neighbours are just as special: the Sunshine Coast Biosphere to the south, including the Conondale Ranges, and the Great Sandy Biosphere to the north, home to the Ramsar listed Great Sandy Strait, and World Heritage listed K'gari.

Thanks to the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) for 30 years of community-focused catchment management. The health of these waterways is integral to the health of our Noosa Biosphere 💚
