Together For Humanity

Together For Humanity works with schools to eliminate prejudice, so all young people feel they belong.

Through programs, activities, and events, we give students the opportunity to meet and better understand people from different backgrounds. Together for Humanity (TFH) is educating people to respond effectively to difference in schools, organisations and communities. We do this by bringing students, teachers and those in the community into contact with people from diverse backgrounds in an open, supportive, and enjoyable setting. This inspires interest, empathy and understanding, encourages questioning of existing prejudices and promotes greater appreciation and respect for others.

The ‘Beyond the Surface’ conversation game was another highlight at our recent interschools encounter in Victoria. Students asked each other questions on topics like migration, courage, fear, faith, and leadership, which provided openings for rich discussion. Faced with questions they wouldn't usually be asked, by people they didn't know, students had the opportunity to explore old and new aspects of their identity and, in many cases, expand their ideas of who they perceived themselves to be. An opportunity to build community connections across school lines, forums such as these also allow all participants to experience the passion and fantastic ideas that young people have when given the opportunity to connect to their values. A highlight from our recent City of Casey interschools encounter was the Earth Art practice. In small groups, students explored what an Acknowledgement of Country could be beyond just words. Together for Humanity facilitators provided natural materials from their local neighbourhoods, and each group created a unique piece of art out of flowers, bark and leaves. Students were inspired and highly engaged, and one teacher reflected that it was the most impactful Acknowledgement he had seen and planned to use it at his school. Photos: Max Roux. Students from Alkira Secondary College and Harkaway Hills College in the City of Casey in Victoria came together for an interschool encounter to share their ideas about ‘Creating the community we want.’ It was an opportunity for young voices to be heard and for students to speak directly to community leaders and their peers. Special guests included Cr Stefan Koomen, Labor Candidate for Narre Warren South, two-time Mayor of Casey and current Councillor for Waratah Ward, and Josh Carell, Multicultural Youth Development Officer from the City of Casey’s Youth Services. The encounter is part of a series of local Youth Summits across Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales. More than a discussion forum, the summits act as a springboard for the next generation of changemakers, empowering students to launch community-led initiatives that build a more inclusive, connected future.
