At Home with the Architect in July // We are opening the Two Sisters Home, a thoughtful reimagining of a Californian bungalow by Mark Szczerbicki Design Studio.
This project balances preservation with play.
Retaining the home’s heritage charm, the design leads into a layered, contemporary extension. As an enduring home for a ceramic artist and her family, it includes a ceramic studio and art-filled interiors. The clients sought a home that retained its bungalow charm and respected its suburban roots, while incorporating a flexible, gallery-like living space and accommodating family needs. In response, the architectural language creates a deliberate journey exploring thresholds and connections. Walking through the heritage front into the rear addition evokes a feeling of discovering a secret suburban art gallery.
Robust materials like brick flooring, concrete, and aluminium cladding offer longevity, while the textured surfaces of the furniture, art and bold colour moments bring warmth and whimsy. Careful attention was given to sightlines and spatial transitions, while still serving the practical needs of family life.
The house is at once gallery, studio, and sanctuary, where thoughtfully designed spaces and nuanced interiors hold space for extraordinary artworks. Embracing both creativity and family, it is a home not just built to last, but to evolve.
About the Architect
M S D S (MSDS) is a passionate and dynamic architectural practice based in Sydney. Founded in 2013 by architect and interior designer duo Mark and Liz Szczerbicki, they are a tight-knit team of creatives who believe that good design should be personal, timeless, and grounded in the way people really live and work.
