All our hearts are broken 💔 but he will live on in our memories.
Today we have to share some heartbreaking news about one of our most memorable koalas Kevin.
Many of you will remember Kevin from his first rescue in 2023 where he had conjunctivitis in both eyes. After his recovery, his release was filmed as part of a Taiwanese documentary. That’s how famous this beautiful boy was.
Not long after, Kevin gave us another story to tell when he decided he wanted to be a “Ninja Turtle” and found himself down a street drain. True to his character, he always managed to keep us on our toes.
In 2025, after he was believed to be hit by a car, many local groups came together to once again rescue Kevin. Unfortunately we didn’t get good news, Kevin had nerve damage and couldn’t use his back legs. Thankfully Dr Kristin Doust at Back to Bush Rehab took him on and gave him Electroacupuncture therapy. In March, Kevin was once again returned to the wild.
Over the following months, we were thrilled to receive many reports of Kevin doing what every rescued koala deserves to do, living wild and free.
Sadly, we were recently called to Kevin once again.
Kevin had deteriorated significantly, he was suspected to have been suffering from koala retrovirus-related diseases. Kevin was humanely euthanised to relieve his suffering.
As heartbreaking as this outcome is, we take comfort in knowing that Kevin was given every opportunity and spent many years back in the wild due to this.
Kevin touched the hearts of so many people, from the rescuers and carers who knew him personally to the thousands who followed his journey. He reminded us why we do what we do, and why every koala is worth fighting for.
Rest in paradise Kevin 🌈 Thank you for making us laugh, worry, cheer, and care so deeply. You will never be forgotten.
Please share any photos or memories of the crazy moments you’ve had with Kevin over the years 💚 we will also post links in the comments.
