A huge thank you to Crescent Lagoon State School for welcoming Capricorn Conservation Council and Ghungalu Three Rivers to be part of your incredible all-day National NAIDOC Week celebration today. 🌱✨

Led by Aunty Roeina and the Darumbal Rangers Rangers, today was truly unforgettable. 🐚🌊🌿

We were so honoured to bring Uncle Steve, Uncle Kerrod, Aunty Wilma and family from Ghungalu Country, together with Uncle Leon Namai from Kaurareg Nation, to share culture, knowledge, stories and connection with the school community. ❤️💛🖤

Thank you so much to all the beautiful staff and children who embraced today with such respect & enthusiasm and to our very special members who helped out. 🌿🦋☀️

We are incredibly grateful to the Elders, Cultural Custodians and Rangers who generously shared their time, culture and knowledge with the next generation. 🌱

🌿🔥 Walking Together on Country at Waddananggu 🔥🌿

This weekend, Capricorn Conservation Council is grateful to be attending Walking Together on Country at Waddananggu as part of the Waddananggu Mala 5-Year Celebration on Wangan and Jagalingou - Standing Our Ground Country. 🖤💛❤️

Led by Gurridyula Gaba Wunggu and the Waddananggu Cultural Custodians, we are spending this special time on Country listening, learning, connecting and celebrating five years of strength, culture and standing strong for Country. 🌿🔥

For now, we’re staying present in the celebration and will share a full update next week.

🌿📣 OUR YOUTH HAVE RAISED THEIR VOICES FOR THE ENVIRONMENT — AND THEY SAY NO TO DATA CENTRES! 📣🌿

And we support them. 💚✊

Capricorn Conservation Council Youth Group and Lock The Gate Alliance is calling on communities across Australia to have their say on the rapid expansion of AI and data centres — with at least 225 data centres currently planned across Australia. 🖥️⚡💧

These enormous facilities can consume huge amounts of electricity and water, while communities are also raising concerns about noise, pollution, land clearing and the potential for new data centres to drive further fossil gas development.

Of particular concern is the Northern Territory, where gas companies are looking at “hyperscale” data centres as a potential new market for fracked gas — linking the AI boom with further pressure for gas expansion. 🚫🔥

Our young people understand that decisions being made today about energy, water, Country and climate will shape the future they inherit.

The Australian Senate is currently holding an inquiry into AI and data centres, and submissions are open until 1 September 2026. 🏛️📣

You do not need to be an expert to make a submission. It can be just a few sentences about what matters to you — whether that’s:

💧 Water consumption
⚡ Energy demand
🌳 Land clearing and biodiversity
🔥 Expansion of gas and fracking
🔊 Noise and impacts on nearby communities
🌏 Climate impacts
👧🧑 The kind of future we’re creating for the next generation

🌿🔬 Seeds of Life: Science, Culture and Student Leadership in Woorabinda! 🌱🎙️

What an incredible National Science Week event Capricorn Conservation Council & Ghungalu Three Rivers hosted today at Woorabinda State School alongside Uncle Milton, Uncle Steve and family! 🤎

It was exceptional to see the Year 5/6 students take over the activity stalls and lead the afternoon—sharing what they had learned and teaching the younger students about plant evolution, from algae and mosses through to ferns, gymnosperms and flowering plants. 🌿🌼

Students explored plants through microscopes, learned about native plant identification, seeds, food growing, composting, herbarium collections and the important relationships between plants, people, culture and Country. 🔬🌱🍂

The whole school then came together for Gumbi Gumbi knowledge sharing led by Uncle Steve and participating Elders. Students will care for the Gumbi Gumbi plants until the trees are ready to be planted in the school grounds under the guidance of Uncle Milton and Uncle Steve. 🌳

We also tested the new podcast equipment donated to Woorabinda State School by CCC! 🎙️🎧 We cannot wait to hear students using this equipment to share their voices, learning and stories into the future. 🔥

A huge thank you to the The University of Queensland, Anita and the entire team for all their support in bringing this Science Week event together. Thank you also to Principal Preston, Mrs G, the school staff, student leaders, activity facilitators, Elders and everyone who helped make the day such a success. 🙌🏽💞

Today demonstrated what is possible when knowledge is passed from Elders to students, culture is respected, and scientific and cultural knowledge are shared side by side under the leadership and authority of the appropriate knowledge holders. 🤎🌿

🌱 Fifteen volunteers, one incredible site and a huge morning of hands-on environmental action! 🌿🧤

Today, Capricorn Coast Landcare Secretary, Capricorn Conservation Council and our Youth Sub-Committee joined Lakes Creek Landcare for the first community working bee at the Nerimbera Fossil Site on Darumbal Country—and what a fantastic turnout it was! 💚

Our volunteers rolled up their sleeves, got dirty and removed a huge amount of Leucaena, Rubber Vine, Lantana, Basket Plant and Guinea Grass. The difference is already incredible! 🌳🔥🌱

A massive thank you to our CCC members and young environmental leaders who came along and gave their time, energy and enthusiasm. Every pair of hands made a difference, and we could not be prouder of our team! 🙌🏽💚

Thank you to Lakes Creek Landcare for welcoming us and leading this important work, and to Capricornia Catchments for supporting practical environmental action across our region. 🌿

A huge shout-out to Rockhampton Regional Council Elliot Hilse - Councillor for Division 2 - Rockhampton Regional Council and Councillor Grant Mathers - Division 3 Rockhampton Regional Council for supporting this project and helping make community-led restoration possible. 👏🏽🌱

🌿🔬Capricorn Conservation Council Announces Seeds of Life in Woorabinda 🔬🌿

CCC is proud to announce Seeds of Life: Growing Science, Food and Knowledge in Woorabinda, brought to the Woorabinda State School community as part of National Science Week.

This special event will bring Woorabinda students, families, Elders and community members together for a day of science, culture, intergenerational learning and Caring for Country.

The hands-on program will respectfully connect plant science with cultural knowledge shared under the guidance and cultural authority of Elders and knowledge holders.

Throughout the day, students will:

🌱 Explore plant evolution—from algae and mosses to ferns, gymnosperms and flowering plants
🌼 Learn about plant life cycles, flowers, fruits and seeds
🔬 Observe plants using microscopes and scientific equipment
🌿 Learn about native plant identification and herbariums
🥕 Discover food growing, composting and healthy soils
🌳 Participate in Gumbi Gumbi planting and Caring for Country activities
🤎 Learn about the connections between plants, people, culture and Country

Students will plant native species at the school, including Yarbun Creations Gumbi Gumbi plants provided by Uncle Steven Kemp.
