History Saved today by one of our Club Members. This antique Shoe Horn engraved Jas. Davies & co dates to around 1916. It was found in a residential block in Allenstown.

20/August 1931 - Death of Mr, James Davis,
PROMINENT ROOKHAMPTON CITIZEN.
The death occurred at 'Leinster' Hospital on Tuesday morning, 11th inst., of a well-known and highly-esteemed personality, in the person of Mr. Jas. Davis, senior partner in the firm of Messrs. J. Davis and Co., boot importers, East-street, Rockhampton.
It falls to the lot of few men to earn such sincere regret by all sections of the community as was caused by the death of Mr.Davis. The deceased gentleman possessed that gentle courtesy and obliging disposition that endeared him to all, and his loss to the catholic comminity as weII as to the town is keenly felt. A native of Condamine, the late Mr. Davis was connected with the boot trade from boyhood, and for the past 16 years conducted the well-known East-street firm, which has grown in recent years to such an extent that new premises had to be sought, and only a few weeks ago the business was transferred to a site opposite the Commonwealth Bank. Taking an active interest in public life, the late Mr, Davis had been treasurer of the Jockey Club for nine years. During that period he officiated as steward, and for many years was associated with the St. Patrick's Day Race Club, being secretary at one time and treasurer for a considerable term. In his youth he was an ardent footballer, playing with the Waratah Club. He was always a prominent member of the H.A.C.B. Society, having occupied various offices, being past president of the St. Joseph's branch, and Past District President also. At the time of his death he occupied the position of District Trustee, which he had held for a number of years. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives, which include his widow, three sons — Hilary (State Stores,Brisbane), Bert and Kevin (Rockhampton) — one brother (Mr. Jack Davis), and three sisters — Misses Davis (Rockhampton). During his illness, which was comparatively short, Mr. Davis was attended by Very Rev. Dean Rowan and Rev.father Dolan. The funeral, which took place on Wednesday morning, was exceedingly large, being attended by all sections of the community. Very Rev.Dean Rowan read the burial prayers, assisted by Rev. Father Dolan, Rev. Father J. P. Murtagh (Mt. Morgan), and Rev. Father Carew. Members of the various branches of the Hibernian Society attended in regalia. — R.I.P.
