MEAA welcomes the Joint Select Committee on AI’s recommendation that Australian creators retain control over how their work is used and are paid when it is used by AI.
The committee has rightly recognised that creators deserve control, consent and fair payment.

Now the government must turn that principle into action by delivering:
• Fair pay for creative and media workers through a levy on AI companies
• Labelling, transparency and stronger moral rights protections
• Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) and Indigenous Data Sovereignty laws
• A robust and effective copyright regime

Australian creators deserve consent, credit and compensation. The AI policy must reflect that reality.

Big Tech should not get a free pass to use creators' work.

The Joint Select Committee on AI has recommended the government review copyright settings to ensure creators retain control of their work and are compensated for its use. That's a welcome step.

Australian creative and media workers deserve consent, control and fair pay for their work and to be fairly paid when it is used by AI.

MEAA members at the ABC have overwhelmingly backed a motion defending the rights of elected union representatives to speak out and represent members.

Members are calling on ABC management to respect legal union rights, commit not to undermine those protections, and meet with staff to discuss their concerns.

Union representatives must be free to advocate for the members they were elected to represent.

Last week Jacqui Duncan, NSW MEAA Equity President, spoke to the Joint Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, testifying how much work voice actors have lost since the widespread adoption of AI voice models.

At the hearing, Big Tech companies were pushing to weaken Australia's copyright laws. MEAA is calling for a stronger copyright regime that means that all creative and media workers are compensated when their work is used in any capacity, including the training of AI models.

High-flying executives from across the world jetted in to the AI inquiry but the most startling revelations came from ordinary Australians.

MEAA member David Heslin is a film critic, editor and a proud Arts Centre Melbourne worker and delegate who was part of the recent strike action.

In this month's MEAA member spotlight, David says creative workers deserve to be valued and paid fairly, and believes strong unions are essential in helping workers realise their collective power.

As David puts it: "Your work matters, and you’re not powerless. A lot of writers [have the] impression that being published is a gift. It’s not – it’s your work, and you deserve to be paid for it. Don’t be afraid to negotiate, and don’t assume that unions are just for people on more traditional work sites. We all benefit from having the power of a union behind us."
