Bangarra Dance Theatre has received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance at the 20th International Festival of Contemporary Dance in Venice, marking an historic international recognition of the company’s work.

NSW dancer ROME has been crowned the 2026 Red Bull Dance Your Style Australian champion.19-year-old Rome won the title and will now represent Australia at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final in Zurich Germany this October, where national champions from around the world will compete for the global title.

The NSW MEAA Graduates Day, held on Friday 14th August, was a resounding success with over 160 new graduates from Acting and Dance schools participating. Graduates heard from workers and industry professionals - including a speech from Sam Reid - to welcome and introduce them to the MEAA community. The day ended with drinks and networking at the Sydney Theatre Company Wharf bar.

RISE, a contemporary dance performance by artistic director, Wiradjuri man Daniel Riley swaps the sets and lighting design of traditional theatres for the rhythm of the rising sun.

The piece starts with a Welcome to Country from First Nations elders, who are invited to share a performance in the form of a song or a story.
Dancers then begin their performance as the sun starts to rise, which ends as the morning breaks.

At the conclusion of the performance, actors and audience members are invited to share breakfast in the morning light.

"What we collate and invest in along the way is relationships and relationship building, with traditional owners, community members, [and] local dance schools."

Two acclaimed contemporary dance works by First Nations choreographers will return to Australia for limited seasons at the Sydney Opera House this September.

Bundjalung and Ngāpuhi artist Amrita Hepi will present Rinse from 10 to 12 September in the Playhouse, while Bungandidj and Ngarrindjeri choreographer Lewis Major will bring Triptych to the Studio from 16 to 19 September.
