The Walkley Foundation honours Peter Manning, one of the great figures in Australian journalism.
Last year Peter received a roaring standing ovation when he won the Walkley Award for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism.
Walkley Foundation CEO Shona Martyn paid tribute to Peter, who was described by his peers as “a colossus of Australian investigative journalism”, a “fierce and loyal protector of journalists” and the “best boss I ever had”.
“Generations of journalists have been inspired by his visionary leadership during a career that spanned TV, print and journalism education over more than 60 years. He was known for his integrity, incredible news instinct and for a steadfast determination to back his troops to get the stories out. His contribution was immense as well as outstanding.”
Peter’s influence on Australian journalism was profound. His leadership, mentorship, integrity and commitment to journalists will be remembered by the people who worked alongside him and were inspired by his example.
The Walkley Foundation honours Peter’s extraordinary contribution to journalism and extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Applications are now open for the Walkley Foundation's 2026 Australia-Korea Media Exchange Program.
Supported by the Australia-Korea Foundation of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and delivered in partnership with the Korea Press Foundation, the program will see six Australian journalists travel to South Korea for a 10-day media exchange from 21 November to 1 December 2026.
Designed for mid to senior-career journalists covering economics, trade, defence and security, energy, or environmental issues, the exchange offers unique access to Korean government, industry, media and academic leaders, along with opportunities to build international networks and produce original reporting for Australian audiences.
The program covers international airfares, accommodation, transfers, travel insurance and a per diem allowance.
Applications are open to journalists employed by Australian media outlets, and freelancers who can meet the program's publication requirements are also encouraged to apply.
Applications close at 11.59pm AEDT on Thursday 22 October 2026.

We’re delighted to announce that the Australia-Korea Media Exchange Program will resume in late 2026, thanks to funding from the Australia-Korea Foundation of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The program brings journalists from Australia and Korea together to exchange expertise, build professional networks and deepen understanding of the Australia-Korea relationship through media.
Applications will open in the coming months, with six Australian journalists selected to travel to South Korea for a 10-day exchange featuring newsroom visits, industry briefings and cultural experiences.
More details about the 2026 Australia-Korea Media Exchange Program will be announced soon. Watch this space.
