There's nothing quite like the magic of a live music performance. Yet Australian musicians are finding it increasingly difficult to make a living from live music, as the use of live musicians in productions and events is declining. Our Keep Music Live campaign is a national call to protect and strengthen live performance, ensuring audiences and musicians can continue to experience the irreplaceable value of live music.

This National Reconciliation Week, MEAA members acknowledge the enduring connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to land, culture, and storytelling. As the union for Australia’s creative and media workers, we recognise that truth-telling and First Nations voices are central to a fair, inclusive, and representative industry.

Australia’s creative industries generate billions, but many creative workers still miss out when their work is broadcast in Australia. Equitable Remuneration (ER) would change that by making sure creators are paid fairly, every time their work is used.
Creative work has value, and that value deserves protection in law.

Today, we mark National Sorry Day, a time to recognise the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to reflect on the ongoing impact of the forced removal of children from their families, communities, and cultures.

MEAA recognises our responsibility to continue to listen and centre First Nations voices with respect and integrity in all that we do.

Reconciliation is not a single moment. It’s an ongoing commitment to truth-telling, culturally safe workplaces, and advocacy for justice and change.

Spotify and Universal Music Group have agreed on a deal that will allow subscribers to generate song covers and remixes using artificial intelligence. We need to ensure that original creators are fairly paid for the use of their work - which is why Equitable Remuneration (ER) must be introduced into Australian copyright law.

By introducing ER into copyright legislation, we ensure creators share in the benefits of AI, have a say in how their work is used, are paid fairly and consistently. Innovation should not come at the expense of workers.
