Right now, productions co-produced by State Opera South Australia are on stage in three cities at once: Beijing, Perth and Adelaide.
It's a significant moment, and one worth pausing on.
🇨🇳 In Beijing, Mozart’s THE MAGIC FLUTE (Season 2025) is playing as part of Beijing Music Festival, a co-production with Opera Hong Kong & Beijing Music Festival that brings a South Australian partnership onto one of Asia's major festival stages in the first ever opera co-production between Australia and China. State Opera Artistic Director, Dane Lam, conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a cast that includes several South Australian singers.
🌏 In Perth, Gounod's ROMÉO ET JULIETTE - built in South Australia - (Season 2025) is about to open at His Majesty's Theatre with West Australian Opera, before heading to Ireland with Irish National Opera.
🎭 And at home in Adelaide, Bizet’s CARMEN has finished being built and is bumping in right now at Her Majesty's Theatre, built entirely in Adelaide by South Australian artisans, technicians and creatives.
This is what sustained investment in the arts makes possible. Every production we share with partners around the world means skilled jobs and creative capability kept here in South Australia, and a cultural export that carries our state's name to new corners of globe, achieving a level of cultural diplomacy that no trade delegation can.
Today, South Australia stands as a home for world-class opera, where productions are imagined, built and launched, and where the next generation of artists can build lasting careers right here in the state.
If you're in Adelaide, Bizet's CARMEN is selling fast and opens in less than two weeks!
