Today we celebrate TWO YEARS since the launch of our Minga Gudjaga Midwifery Practice (MGMP) 🙌🏾 We are proud to have become the first Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) to employ midwives with visiting rights at a public maternity hospital.

This groundbreaking initiative means that women in our community have the incredible benefit of being cared for by their known and trusted Waminda midwife during labour and birth at the Shoalhaven Hospital 🤱🏽

Over the past two years, Waminda’s Birthing on Country team has supported 134 babies on their journey from the (miriral) spirit world to the physical world and beyond. The outcomes speak for themselves, showcasing just how impactful this model has been on the lives of women and their babies:
✨ 71% experienced spontaneous onset of labour.
✨ 65% vaginal births, 14% elective caesareans, 15% unplanned caesareans & 6% instrumental delivery.
✨ 95% of births were full-term.
✨ 96% of babies were born a healthy birth weight.
✨ 84% of mothers were breastfeeding at birth.

What makes this initiative truly special is its dynamic nature, adapting continually based on community feedback. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the women who have chosen to trust Waminda with their pregnancies and motherhood journeys. It is a true honour to be part of such a profound experience, and we wish you and your families continuing spiritual and physical wellness in the years to come 👶🏾👶🏽👶🏻

🧸 I was delighted to catch up with Mel Briggs from Waminda - Birthing on Country today, and also to hear Whitney Fordham’s wonderful story about her caring and culturally safe on Country birthing experience supported by the Waminda midwifery team at Shoalhaven Hospital.
Mel and Whitney were guest speakers at the Australian Parliamentary Friends of Maternal Health event which focussed on restoring and protecting rural birthing services to ensure every woman has the opportunity to birth safely, locally and with dignity.
I’m proud to support Waminda’s Minga Gudjaga, Australia’s first Aboriginal-owned and midwifery-led free standing birth centre which is being built at Nowra with a $22.5 million grant from the Albanese Labor Government.

Waminda is honoured to celebrate a heart-warming milestone; the first 100 babies born since the launch of our Minga Gudjaga Midwifery Practice on May 1st 2024. Each of these births represents much more than just a moment in time; they are a testament to strong culture, women’s leadership, and community strength.

Every baby born through Waminda’s Birthing on Country carries with them a story that is deeply connected to culture and to Country, surrounded by care that honours Aboriginal ways of knowing, being, and doing.

We celebrate the strength of every mother who chose Birthing on Country for their journey, and we acknowledge all the dads, partners, grandmothers, aunties, cousins, and siblings who supported them. Your stories and your strength continue to guide our work.

🎉 To celebrate this milestone, we are having a BBQ beach day for all the 100 babies, mums and families on Wednesday 17th December! For those haven’t RSVP’d yet, use the link below to let us know you’re coming. Send us a DM if you have any questions ❤️💛🖤
