It's 1000 days today, since the Murphy Report was handed to our Australian Government, with clear recommendations for Gambling Reforms. This included the important recommendation to ban online gambling advertisements which bombard our youths and families daily, across all forms of media, creating multi-generational gambling harms.

It's time to take serious action on Gambling Harms and the fact that this report has not been fully implemented, despite cross party support, is a clear indication our Government has been captured by a harmful Industry.

Not The Melbourne Cup!

It’s not that I’m a party pooper
Or don’t enjoy some fun.
It’s just that I can’t fathom
why we celebrate some bloody horse that’s won.

It seems to me that games of chance
Advance our sense of luck
But then there’s always costs to pay
And ending up a schmuck.

This gambling life is full of dreams
Of features, wins & wealth
However it’s the gilded cage
Which keeps us from ourselves.

How many times have dreams been dashed
Upon those plans made sorry
How many times have fears been flamed
By furnaces of worry.

And so the Melbourne Cup appears
We plan the office partying
And never sense the pain or fears
From which others may be smarting.

A gamble is the “cultural spirit”
From which we must not shudder
But for some it is the tidal wave –
A boat without its rudder.

So whilst you sip your chilled champagne
And heckle on your horses
Please spare a thought for those whose hats
Don’t fit these racing courses.

Remember that despite some skill
It’s still a game of chance
And Lady Luck may still prevail
To leave you on your arse!

Another terrific opportunity to work with GambleAware and their vitally important Reclaim the Game Program, partnering with elite NSW based national sporting clubs.
The start of this year saw the GIS contribute by presenting Lived Experience stories to various clubs accross the NRL, NBL and ANC with the A-League coming up.
