Celebrating NAIDOC Week - 50 years of Deadly ❤️💛🖤💙💚

This year marks 5 decades of NAIDOC Week – a movement that began to advocate for basic human rights and freedom and has grown into a celebration of culture, history and achievements. We stand alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and acknowledge the stories, strength, resilience and leadership of the oldest living culture in history.

We look forward to being part of NAIDOC events throughout the week and would love to see you there - visit to see what’s on near you.

One long night for a lifetime of change.

CareSouth’s CEO, Penny Hood, and Manager, Hamish, proudly participated in this year’s Vinnies CEO Sleepout, where the night was long, cold and uncomfortable, but it was just one night. For some, a hot shower, warm clothes and a bed aren’t guaranteed, which is why showing up and making homelessness visible matters.

Penny shares: “Anyone can experience homelessness, at any time and for many reasons. As I was lying on my bit of cardboard, I was immensely thankful that hundreds of other CEOs and teams were doing the same. It was my privilege to be cold and uncomfortable, because it hopefully means someone won’t have to experience a night on the streets in the future.”

We are proud to stand alongside our CEO, staff and the hundreds of participants who took part to raise funds for homelessness. And thanks to Vinnies Australia for the good work you do!

We also want to thank our community for your support of Penny and Hamish. Community is such a big part of who we are, and we’re grateful for the generous and kind people we have in ours.

It’s not too late to donate if you would like to support: https://www.ceosleepout.org.au/organisation?kw=CareSouth

CareSouth is incredibly grateful to open the doors to a newly renovated Shoalhaven Youth Support Service (SYSS) unit, made possible by the generous support from Sikorsky Australia! 🚁✨

Recently, the Sikorsky Australia team devoted their own time to transform one of the SYSS units. They painted, assembled furniture, and provided essential items, creating a welcoming space for young people aged 16-24 in CareSouth’s SYSS program, who are experiencing homelessness.

The project became even more meaningful when the Sikorsky team included SYSS young people in the renovation activity, giving them a strong sense of pride and achievement in creating their own space.

We would also like to thank Climax Air Conditioning and Stowe Australia for their generous donation and installation of a much-needed air conditioner, as well as Nowra’s Darling Murri artist, Stephanie Knox, for donating a beautiful, bespoke Aboriginal painting for the unit.

This collaboration is one of many with Sikorsky, which continues to support SYSS through various initiatives. We’re grateful for their community spirit, which helps us build a better future for our clients. ❤️

Could you be a foster carer and support Ally?*

Sliding down slippery dips with grass-stained pants, eating ice-cream until it melts down your sleeve, scribbling on paper (and sometimes accidentally on the table)… This is what childhood is all about.

Ally* is an energetic 7-year-old who wants all these things and more but first, she needs a supportive foster family who will encourage her, care for her and see her thrive - a place she calls home.

If you have the time, patience and attentiveness, we welcome your enquiry – caring for a child is a big responsibility, but it could change Ally’s life.

Ally needs long-term Illawarra or Shoalhaven-based carers who are patient, discerning and will help her connect with culture and community.

We will share more information if you enquire to ensure you feel informed and equipped to welcome a child into your home.

To learn about applying to become a foster carer or caring for Ally, contact CareSouth on 1300 554 260, email [email protected] or fill out our online form at caresouth.org.au/our-services/foster-care/.

Homelessness is an issue close to our hearts. That’s why CareSouth’s CEO, Penny Hood, is participating in this year’s Vinnies CEO Sleepout and will spend the night on the streets on June 18 to raise funds for people experiencing homelessness across Australia.

Penny shares: “While one night on the streets won’t end homelessness, it’s an opportunity to stand in solidarity with people experiencing homelessness, raise awareness and advocate for systemic change.”

A big thank you to Vinnies Australia the many CEO’s sleeping out for the cause and the teams across Australia, including our incredible CareSouth Shoalhaven Youth Support Service staff, for working tirelessly to address homelessness in our communities, every day.

If you’d like to support Penny and this important cause, you can donate via the website https://www.ceosleepout.org.au/fundraisers/pennyhood or share this post to help us spread the word. Every contribution counts.

To celebrate National Volunteer Week, we’re shining a spotlight on the extraordinary volunteer mentors from CareSouth’s Aunties & Uncles program!

Every month, they generously offer their time to mentor young people who need it most in our communities. It’s the small moments, the consistency, and the genuine care they provide that make a life-changing difference.

This week, and every week, we are incredibly grateful for all that you do. 💛

Youth homelessness isn’t always visible, but it’s a reality for many. Across Australia, 1 in 6 young people have faced homelessness, often couch surfing or moving between unstable living situations.

CareSouth's Shoalhaven Youth Support Service (SYSS) is dedicated to changing that by providing emergency accommodation, outreach support and case management to help young people find their feet. Our trauma-informed staff work with young people to build resilience and independence by helping them with:

🛠️ Life skills for everyday independence

🎓 Education and job connections

💚 Health and wellbeing support

🤝 Community connections

🏡 Support to find safe and stable accommodation

On Youth Homelessness Matters Day, we’re reminded of the importance of early support in helping young people regain stability and build a positive future. SYSS is passionate about empowering young people with the tools they need to build a better future.
