Free birth education sessions for multicultural families

Are you expecting a baby? Join a free birth education session designed for multicultural families in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.

The sessions will cover:
• Normal labour and birth
• Movements to help with pain
• Decision making
• Tips for breastfeeding
• Caesarean birth
• Recovery after birth
• Navigating maternity services

Sessions are being held for different communities in Wollongong and Nowra, including Burmese/Karenni, Arabic, Nepalese, and mixed multicultural communities.

Yesterday, we visited the Senior Social Group at the Nowra Showground to run a Census Bingo session, where we had the opportunity to catch up with Connie and Elsa and present them with their thank you card and gifts.

Connie and Elsa, recently featured in the U and Me Shoalhaven series.

Their film is the third story in our U and Me Shoalhaven series, following the growing friendship between women from Italian and Spanish backgrounds brought together through a local community group.

What begins with hesitation and cultural differences soon blossoms into a strong sense of belonging. Through conversation, shared meals and everyday moments, they find common ground and build meaningful connections.

By embracing each other’s traditions, stories and experiences, they create a warm and supportive space that feels like family. Their journey highlights the beauty of multiculturalism and shows how openness and acceptance can bring people together in powerful ways.
