The Mary Potter Foundation Inc Supporting loving, compassionate and meaningful end-of-life care for patients and their families.

Quite simply, our story is made possible because people choose to support the Foundation showing they share our belief that caring for people at the end of their lives is an honour and a privilege. However, if you’re interested, here is a little bit of our history and why we exist. The Mary Potter Foundation, a South Australian charity, has been around since 1987 when it was recognised that the Ma

ry Potter Hospice could not survive without support from the community. A group of dedicated people closely associated with the Hospice formed an auxiliary that became an incorporated association in 1988. Since then, thanks to the support of generous and caring South Australians the Mary Potter Hospice has remained as one of the most important and highly regarded providers of in-patient palliative and end of life care. Hundreds of patients and their families every year are so grateful for the compassion, the dignity and the love that the Hospice team brings into their lives. The Mary Potter Foundation has been privileged to play a part through community support to ensure that care is there every day it is needed, and that the facilities along with staff skills and knowledge are continually improved to provide the best possible environment and standard of care for everyone.

We are excited that spring is finally here! With it comes brighter days, soft sunshine, and nature in bloom. Claire, Jane, and Mel are leading the way as we all embrace this beautiful new season. 🤩

At the Foundation, we strive to bring that same feeling of warmth, comfort, and unexpected gentle joy to patients and families.

We invite you to support our Spring Appeal. Your generosity helps fund the little things that make a lasting impact:

💐 Loving Blooms: A bright pot of fresh flowers and a handwritten note for patients when they arrive at the Hospice.
🍓 A Sanctuary for Families: A kitchen that feels like home, stocked with fresh seasonal treats, tea, and coffee - a quiet space for loved ones to pause and recharge.
🎶 Melodies of Comfort: Gentle live music filling the corridors with calm, nostalgia, and peace.
🍽️ A Special Shared Meal: Bringing a favourite dish or celebratory spread directly to patients and families so they can connect over a meal that matters.

We simply can’t do this without the compassionate hearts of our incredible community. Together, we are creating treasured moments of connection, offering patients and families a sense of togetherness, reassurance, and love at life's most tender times. 💗

Sometimes magic happens in the smallest, most thoughtful ways. 🌸

After learning of a patient's love for Sweet Pea flowers, the Hospice Social Work team asked if we could make the impossible happen and source some for their room.

That’s when one of our team members, Mel, remembered Lesley. A few years ago, Lesley hosted a Sweet Pea workshop & garden tour to raise funds for the Foundation in honour of her dear mum.

Mel gave Lesley a call on a whim to see if there was any chance she had any blooms ready to be picked, and thanks to her early planting - she did! Lesley was overjoyed to help and arrived with three gorgeous bunches of fresh sweet peas for the patient's room. The family were so touched at the special gesture.

Thank you, Lesley, for bringing so much love - and the sweet scent of home - into the Hospice. ❤️

Recently, a Hospice patient shared a simple wish - they were longing to flick through some up-to-date gardening and cooking magazines. 📖🌸

Our Patient and Family Support Coordinator, Mel, immediately headed out to pick up a fresh stack, bringing beautiful gardens and seasonal recipes back to offer familiarity, nostalgia, and gentle comfort.

It is often the smallest details, like a thoughtful gesture, a favourite topic, or a comforting treat, that leave the most lasting impact.💗

A big thank you to We care in the West ❤ and their wonderful founder, Nadine, for delivering another fabulous batch of goodies to us. 🍭🍫

The We Care in the West community came together to gather an incredible donation of sweets to fill our Family Kitchen in the Hospice. These treats do so much more than satisfy a sweet tooth - they bring lovely smiles, warm comfort, and a little piece of home to patients and families.

Thank you for your dedication to supporting our community; we are so grateful for your continued kindness and generosity. 💖

For anyone navigating challenging times, a gentle touch that offers comfort, relief, and a moment to breathe can mean everything. 🍃

Our compassionate donors fund a complementary therapy program that brings trained therapists directly to patients and families, supporting their physical and emotional wellbeing. By relieving physical tension and helping manage anxiety and sleep, these hands-on sessions help strengthen both mind and body.

As Rose, one of the dedicated complementary therapists, reflects:

"It’s not just about the treatments - it allows people to share, to talk if they want to, or not if they don’t. To enjoy a moment of ordinary life that isn’t about their health, and to feel that they matter as a person."

When patients and their loved ones are carrying so much for each other, these sessions provide a safe sanctuary to release built-up stress, open up space for calming reflection, and restore a sense of peace.

"In a difficult time, it is something that brings not only comfort, but also normality to their life," Rose says. "It’s a privilege and an honour, and I feel very grateful to be able to share this with people and their families."

Thank you to Rose and the skilled complementary therapy team for bringing such warmth, relief, and moments of gentle connection to patients and families. 🌸

Visiting a hospice can be an overwhelming experience for a child. When a family is facing serious illness or navigating loss, little ones need gentle guidance, emotional support, and meaningful ways to process what they are feeling. 🩷

That’s where Backpacks of Love come in. 🎒✨

Developed with the guidance of Calvary North Adelaide Hospital 's Counselling Manager, Sigourney, these packs are filled with very considered items designed to aid children through the grieving process and help them stay connected to their loved one.

Inside, children find:
📖 A gentle book carefully chosen to help them navigate loss and remind them that love and connection remain.
🖍️ Mindful creative tools and activities crafted to give children a safe, expressive space to work through complex emotions.

While we can't change outcomes, we can change the experience for families. Surrounding children with intentional, compassionate care helps bring warmth into the hospice environment and lets families know they are supported every step of the way. 💗

We’re so touched to hear how much Peter and Pauline, pictured, are enjoying their Winter Warmer pack. For Peter, the hot chocolate cubes and cosy socks were just what he needed to stay warm and comfortable at home.

As Peter put it: "This gift from the Foundation is so thoughtful and kind. I made the most delicious hot chocolate with the marshmallow cubes and the socks are perfect for the cold August weather!"

It’s a simple gesture, but bringing a little comfort and quiet joy to patients receiving Calvary Health Care Palliative Home Care is a true privilege. 💖

What’s behind the door? 🚪🍪

We are excited to unveil the new Hospice pantry, stocked to the brim with delicious treats for patients and families. This great new space was made possible thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors.

Positioned right near the Family Kitchen, it allows the wonderful Hospice volunteers to quickly and easily restock items, so warmth and nourishment are always close by, day and night.

Inside the pantry, there is also a special board filled with messages of appreciation. It is a daily reminder of the kindness of our donor and volunteer community, whose compassionate support makes acts of care like this possible.💗

“We had the saddest and happiest days of our lives made possible through what you did, and I will never be able to repay the memories you gave us.” - Deb, wife of Hospice patient, Phil

When time is precious, creating meaningful moments together matters most. 💗

The Foundation was privileged to help host a wedding for Phil and Deb's daughter, as well as a 33rd birthday celebration for their son. These beautiful milestones allowed a family to come together, share joy, and hold on to special memories.
