Nature Conservation Society of South Australia

Nature Conservation Society of South Australia South Australia's Major Biodiversity Advocate! The Society's primary objective is to foster the conservation of the State's wildlife and natural habitats.

The Nature Conservation Society of South Australia is a voluntary body with members drawn from all parts of the State and all walks of life. Our activities include:

* protecting and managing habitats, particularly native vegetation
* researching threatened species and habitats
* working to ensure adequate park dedication, management and legislation
* educating the community and all tiers of

government
* co-operating with other conservation groups and land managers

The Society has taken action on many varied environmental issues since its formation in 1962. A major concern during the Society's early years was the need for South Australia to have an extensive parks system to ensure that the State's many plants and animals are conserved in their natural environment. The Society has sought the addition of new reserves and opposed the resumption of existing reserves when necessary. It has been Society policy to put its case objectively, based on the facts available. In many cases it has been necessary to carry out field studies in the areas in question, and since 1966 in most years there has been a major biological survey carried out by members and other volunteers. The Society also seeks grant funding to contract out research related to environmental management and education. Studies done by or on behalf of the Society are published as reports and made available to the public through sale and distribution to libraries and government institutions. We started our Bird ID & Monitoring training course on Sept 6th with 20 eager participants.

We’re 4 sessions in with another 6 to go. They’ve learnt about taxonomic classification, evolution and speciation, how birds change over time, different life stages and the plumage differences, colouration and patterning of feathers, memory aids to remember calls/songs, and a whole lot more!! And we’ve identified over 100 species using the Australian Bird Guide (Menkhorst et al. 2017)!!

Here we are at Morialta Conservation Park looking and listening for birds. We saw a pair of Scarlet Robins, a White-throated Treecreeper, Rainbow Lorikeets, Adelaide Rosellas, Galah, Striated Pardalote, Crescent Honeyeaters, Striated Thornbills, New Holland Honeyeaters, Little Ravens and more.

This project is supported by a grant from the South Australian Government’s Citizen Science Fund.

The NCSSA are now equipped to train and certify people in bird identification and monitoring thanks to the and a grant from the South Australian Government’s Citizen Science Fund!

Here’s some photos/videos from the training last year taught by the brilliant Dr Greg Kerr of . One of the highlights of the training were the group bird walks at the beginning of each training session. We visited different environments to view the variety of SA birdlife. There was a lot of knowledge sharing during these walks!

The NCSSA will be running our first Bird Identification and Monitoring course this spring and will post how to be involved when that has been organised. So keep your eyes peeled if you’re interested in becoming a bird monitoring citizen scientist!

‘ReBird the Ranges is an exciting initiative taking nature-positive action to restore woodland bird populations and habitats across the Mount Lofty Ranges.’

The ‘Action Plan for reversing the decline of Mount Lofty Ranges woodland birds 2025-2100’ was officially launched on 13th February by Hon. Susan Close MP, Minister for Climate, Environment, and Water. You can view the Action Plan on the website https://rebirdtheranges.org/.
