Vale Dr Andrew Smith
Lincoln College mourns the passing of Dr John Andrew Stanley Smith on December 12th, 2025 — alumnus (1957–63), College President in 1963, Life Member of the College and devoted member of College Council from 1973–1985, serving as Council Secretary and Council Chair.
Together with his wife, Dr Jane Smith, Andrew enjoyed a distinguished international career as an anaesthetist, yet he remained deeply connected to Lincoln. At his last visit to the College, he fondly recalled personal milestones intertwined with the College’s history, including his 1975 wedding in what is now the Milne Building administration office and spoke proudly of their children, Robyn and Robert.
As a student, Andrew was a member of the College rowing eight, contributing to three victories. More importantly, he helped foster a strong sense of community and connection that continues to define Lincoln College today. His leadership, generosity and care for students have left an enduring mark on College life.
Andrew’s legacy lives on through the Andrew Smith Scholarship, awarded to a second-year student who demonstrates active participation, initiative, leadership, collaboration and a positive contribution to College life — values Andrew embodied throughout his life. The Drs Smith also endowed the Jane Smith Scholarship for students second year and above who demonstrate similar engagement and values.
Our heartfelt condolences go to Jane, Robyn, Robert, and their family. Andrew’s commitment to leadership and enduring support for Lincoln College will continue to inspire generations of students.

Vale Rev Dr John Whitehead, Master of Lincoln College 1973-1984.
We are sad to advise the Lincoln College community of the passing of Dr Whitehead, on 19 December 2025.

Dr Whitehead was the second "Master” of the College from 1973-1984 and was quite a forward-thinking man of the time. He was a deeply respected leader whose time at Lincoln College helped shape the community we know today. Along with his beloved wife, Ervyn, Dr Whitehead fostered a culture of egalitarianism, connection, academic success and shared responsibility that warmed the lives of Lincoln students during a crucial decade of change.
• He was the first Master to admit women into the College (granted, there were only 12 of them) but very quickly their numbers increased.
• He disbanded the well-established “Senior Common Room” in 1973, stating that it was "divisive and elitist."
• He re-introduced formal tutorials for students in 1975
• He was instrumental in the purchase of the Whitehead Building in 1975, and was the first Master to reside in the house with his family – Ervyn, Peter, Rosemary and Susanna – and a select group of students. The house was once the home of Sir Arthur Rymill, a former Lord Mayor of Adelaide, after whom Rymill Park is named. It sat in the middle of the campus (fully fenced) and effectively divided it in two. Once purchased, large fences were removed to allow students free flowing movement from East to West.
• He introduced the ’student labour scheme’ in 1977 to combat rising staffing costs and to create a sense of community among the students.

Our thoughts are with the Whitehead family.

Dr Whitehead's life will be celebrated at Wesley College, where he was Master from 1984 – 1996. Funeral Service: 11am Friday, 2 January 2026. Wesley College Chapel, University of Sydney, and webcast live. Live Stream page: https://www.ceremonycast.com.au/johnwhitehead/

You are invited to join the live ceremony online. Leave a name or message in the guest book. A back-up video page will also be available (https://vimeo.com/event/5613906/33c6043df9). When the live stream is over, a recording will be available for a month.
