Recruitment to the ENDIA Study has closed. The ENDIA (Environmental Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity) study is looking into what contributes to the development of Type 1 Diabetes in early childhood. Type 1 Diabetes in children is twice as common as it was 20 years ago. This is because our environment has changed and at-risk children are more likely to develop Type 1 Diabetes. If we can understand exactly what in the environment is harmful or protective, we can develop strategies to prevent Type 1 Diabetes. We believe that children are exposed to these environmental triggers very early in life, perhaps even before they are born. Accordingly, the ENDIA study has recruited 1511 participants across Australia from the pregnancy or up to 6 months of age that have a first-degree relative (i.e. baby's Mum, Dad or older sibling) with Type 1 Diabetes. ENDIA is an observational investigation and does not involve any study medications or treatments. Further information is available on the ENDIA website at www.endia.org.au. 🌟 Celebrating Sue — one of our dedicated ENDIA research coordinators!

You've seen hundreds of ENDIA children complete their final study visits over the past year — but as visits wind up, it's also time to say goodbye to the incredible research coordinators who made every one of those visits possible.

Today, we're celebrating Sue, our wonderful ENDIA research nurse in Sydney. 💙

Anyone who's worked with Sue knows her sunny disposition, great sense of humour, and absolute can-do attitude — she's been an incredible presence for our ENDIA families and the whole team, visit after visit, year after year.

Thank you, Sue, for everything you've brought to this study and to the families you've supported along the way. We'll miss you and your energy!

🏅 Elliott's ENDIA journey comes to a close

Elliott has officially completed her final ENDIA Study visit — and walked away with a well-earned medal and certificate to prove it! 🎉

Years of visits, samples, and questionnaires later, Elliott's contribution now forms part of one of the largest pregnancy-birth cohorts in the Southern hemisphere. That's something to be incredibly proud of.

Congratulations, Elliott — you've been a brilliant ENDIAN from start to finish. 💙 It’s nice to see you display your certificate with pride!

Josie from NSW has been an amazing participant!

She has had 15 blood tests through the ENDIA regional program.

Josie hopes that as a result of her participation her mum won’t have to “wear needles anymore”.

Thank you so much, Josie. We are hoping to find the causes of so that we can prevent it in the future.

Hopefully, further knowledge arising from the ENDIA Study can benefit people at all stages of the condition in some way.

🌟 Aria just wrapped up her ENDIA journey — and what a journey it's been!

This marks Aria's very last ENDIA Study visit. From tiny baby check-ins to this final milestone, she's grown up alongside this research — and honestly, so have we. 💙

Aria is one of hundreds of ENDIA kids whose samples, questionnaires, and study contacts are quietly powering some of the most detailed research into type 1 diabetes risk anywhere in the world.

Every data point matters, and hers has been part of that story from the very beginning.

So here's to you, Aria — and to your family, for showing up, year after year, for something bigger than any one visit. 🙌

🦷 Although ENDIA study visits are finishing up, there's one thing we're still collecting — baby teeth!

Teeth act like a time capsule, recording a child's environmental exposures (the "exposome") layer by layer as they grow. This makes teeth incredibly valuable pieces of the puzzle for understanding what early-life factors may influence type 1 diabetes risk.

So even though we won’t see you after this year, if your child has lost a baby tooth at home and you haven't sent one to us yet, we'd still love to receive it — whenever you're ready. No rush, and every tooth genuinely helps.

Ask your coordinator for a tooth kit at your last visit, or email the team at [email protected] to find out how to send your child's tooth to us.

Meet Archer — who has just completed his final ENDIA Study visit! 🌟

From infancy right through to now, Archer and his family have been part of something big: helping our researchers understand what drives Type 1 diabetes risk in children, so future generations might be diagnosed earlier — or even avoid it altogether oneday.

Every visit, every sample, every questionnaire from families like Archer's has added another piece to the puzzle. Thank you, Archer, for your dedication and for being such an important part of the ENDIA story. 💙

Could the "good" compounds our gut bacteria make from fibre affect a child's risk of type 1 diabetes? Our team tested this using over 1,100 stool samples from ENDIA mums and bubs — comparing children who developed islet autoimmunity with those who didn't. 💩🧫

The reassuring result: these gut bacteria byproducts (called SCFAs; short chain fatty acids) were not linked to islet autoimmunity risk. Levels looked similar across both groups, up to the appearance of islet autoimmunity. ✅

Along the way, we spotted some expected patterns too — SCFA levels rose steadily in bub's first year, and jumped noticeably once solid foods were introduced. A nice reminder of how quickly little gut microbiomes respond to new foods! 🥑🍠

SCFA were reduced in the mums living with T1D compared to the mums without the condition, but this didn’t change the babies' risk of islet autoimmunity. This means that SCFA may play a role later on in T1D progression, something we are still working on.

This finding helps rule out one piece of the puzzle, so we can continue on our quest. Thank you to every ENDIA family who contributed a sample — this is your research in action.
