LEST WE FORGET

On Wednesday 11 November 2026, our community will gather at Civic Park Cenotaph to honour the service and sacrifice of Australian service personnel in all wars and conflicts.

The Remembrance Day service is scheduled for 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. A special highlight is planned: an F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter flypast over Newcastle at 11:00 am. Final timings and flypast arrangements remain subject to confirmation.

Three months ago, the band received this letter from RSL NSW acknowledging the role that the band plays in ANZAC Day commemorations in Newcastle.
Thanks to the Newcastle RSL Sub Branch, we are one of the very few bands remaining outfitted in full highland dress, which we reserve for RSL services and engagements. Without their support, our band would not be able to present at such a high standard nor be dressed and attired so well.
The band is truly indebted to the Newcastle RSL Sub Branch and honoured to represent them, being acknowledged by the acting RSL NSW President was quite unexpected but very gratefully received.

Great work Brett!

Brett is known to many locals as the friendly JP who witnesses documents at Mayfield Library.
But Brett's community service to Mayfield goes far beyond that.
We sat down with Brett at his “office” (the library) to find out more.
Brett is the vice chair and long time board member of the Mayfield Business Improvement Association, a member of the 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗦𝗟 𝘀𝘂𝗯-𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵 as well as a member of the choir 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 who sang at the Anzac Day Dawn Service this year.

When Brett bought his house in Mayfield in the 80s he worked multiple jobs and took in boarders to afford to pay his loan. Seven years later he met his partner Don, working in hospitality and they have lived happily in their Mayfield home for 35 years.

Brett is to be found most days helping out someone in Mayfield, from sprucing up the gardens in the Dora St car parks to giving his time as a Justice of the Peace.
📚If you'd like to meet up with Brett for his JP services please send a message to this page or contact Mayfield Library on 49746630.

And make sure you say “Hi” if you see him around! 🙂
