If you’re driving near the RSL in Bellevue please watch out for the mother duck and ducklings. She decided to cross the road 3 times in front of me today and nearly gave me a heat attack!

Malaya and Borneo Veterans' Day is commemorated annually on 31 August in Australia.
It honors the service and sacrifice of Australian military personnel who served in the Malayan Emergency (1948–1960) and the Indonesian Confrontation (1962–1966).

Malayan Emergency: Australia deployed forces starting in 1950 to fight communist insurgents. Over 7,000 Australians served, with 39 losing their lives. An additional 2,000 served in post-emergency operations on the Thai-Malay border until 1966.

Indonesian Confrontation: Fought in Borneo and the Malay Peninsula, this campaign involved Malaysian, British, and Australian forces countering Indonesian incursions until a peace agreement was signed in August 1966.

The Battle of Long Tan was a fierce engagement on August 18, 1966, in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam, where 108 outnumbered Australian and New Zealand soldiers defeated a much larger Viet Cong force.

Key Facts of the Battle

Date and Duration: Fought on August 18, 1966, lasting for roughly 3.5 hours in heavy monsoon rain inside a rubber plantation.

Forces Involved: Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR), alongside three New Zealand artillery personnel from 161 Field Battery, totaling 108 men, faced an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops.

Casualties: 18 Australians were killed and 24 wounded, while at least 245 enemy bodies were counted on the field after the battle.

Turning Point: Accurate and continuous artillery support from nearby Nui Dat, critical am******on drops by RAAF helicopters, and the late arrival of armored personnel carrier reinforcements forced the enemy to withdraw.

Legacy: The anniversary of the battle (August 18) is officially observed in Australia as Vietnam Veterans' Day.

Lest we forget.
