Reading development is about so much more than learning to recognize words on a page.

It is the gradual process of building vocabulary, understanding meaning, making connections, asking questions, developing fluency, and gaining the confidence to engage with the world through words.

For children, every book they encounter is an opportunity to learn something new. Every story introduces new language and ideas.

When children have consistent access to books and the support they need to read, they are given the foundation to keep learning, not only in the classroom, but throughout their lives.

Today, we spent the day at Lola Carter Academy in Karomajigi IDP Camp distributing essential learning resources. Thanks to the generous funding from the Australian High Commission through the Direct Aid Program (DAP), we are making sure these children have the tools they need to succeed.

You can see the pure joy on their faces! With these resources, learning becomes more colourful, impactful, and accessible for every child.

What does it look like to give a child the tools to explore a world of possibilities?

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, communities are filled with children who are curious, imaginative and eager to learn. Sometimes, what makes a difference is simply having the right tools to help that curiosity grow.

Learning doesn’t look the same everywhere, but every child deserves the opportunity to learn with tools that open up new possibilities.

Because when we give children more ways to learn, we give them more ways to imagine what is possible.

Hope is five years old, and every morning she wakes up excited for one reason: school.

“I like coming to school,” Hope says with a big smile, “because I get to read with my teacher and my friends.”

Every day, Hope’s teacher gathers the class in a cozy corner of the classroom, and together they open the Sun Books tablet. Hope loves this part the most.

“My favorite story is about a little bear who goes on an adventure,” Hope says. “My teacher lets me hold the tablet and read myself.”

With Sun Books, Hope can hear stories read aloud, follow along with the words, and explore books that might not have made it to her classroom any other way. Reading time isn’t just Hope’s favorite part of the day, it’s where she feels most like herself. Surrounded by her friends and her teacher, she’s learning that reading can take her anywhere.

During our stakeholder meeting to commemorate International Literacy Day, Faith Olaseinde , COO of Money Africa shared why literacy remains so important in today’s world.
